Tanzania is a huge country and is divided into 26 administrative regions. For the traveller on safari in Tanzania however, it is more helpful to think of Tanzania in terms of the three major travel areas.

Northern Tanzania - safari country

The Northern safari circuit is the most famous route along which are some of Africa's most spectacular wilderness attractions, including the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Southern and Western Tanzania - wild and remote

Southern and western Tanzania is still relatively unexplored, more off-the-beaten track. That's said, the area's prominence as one of Africa's best wilderness regions is quickly catapulting it to safari celebrity super status. Top of the A-list are the Selous Game Reserve, Gombe Stream National Park and the Mahale Mountains National Park

The Coast of Tanzania - beaches and islands

Then of course, there's the coast of Tanzania, off which a few perfectly placed islands live atop the Indian Ocean - sparkling like the ancient jewellery of old gods. Oh, and did we mention Zanzibar, the original spicy Indian Ocean getaway?
