Approximately one third of Tanzanians identify themselves as Christian, and a third are Muslim - many of whom live on Zanzibar, long influenced and shaped by Arabic traders and settlers.
The dominance of Islam on Zanzibar means that the visitor should be a little more circumspect when on the island - read about the culture of Zanzibar for more information.
The remaining third practice one of the country's numerous indigenous religions, which usually reflect a relationship with the ancestral spirit world.
Along with Christianity and Islam, the Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist faiths are practiced by members of the Asian minorities on Tanzania's mainland and the islands.
