Tanzania - Towns & Cities

There are not many large modern cities in Tanzania, but what they lack in size, they make up for in character.

The largest city, and one-time capital Dar es Salaam, is still considered by many as the social capital. The new capital Dodoma is not well known outside of Tanzania.

Arusha is the capital of the safari tourism industry as it is within easy reach of most of the renowned game reserves.

Each is influenced in its own measure by the history of Tanzania and the people who have passed through it. Influenced by the Arab traders of old and the Asian population that still exists today, means many towns have an Eastern flavour.

There is also much evidence of its colonial past, both German and British and of course the African spirit permeates every town and city in Tanzania. Do not be surprised to find locals walking around in traditional dress and traditional dhows anchored in the port towns.
