Tanzania is home to more than eighty species of large mammals. Just about anything you could wish to see, you can see here, be it predators, primates, antelope or other large mammals.

Probably Tanzania's most famous animal is the wildebeest, the star species of the great migration on the Serengeti plains. On their enormous round trip, the wildebeest are preyed upon by lions, cheetahs, wild dogs and other predators and opportunistic scavengers, like hyenas and jackals.

To find out more about the wildlife on your Tanzania safari and Africa (since there are few animals in Africa that aren't in Tanzania) an excellent idea is to consult the African Wildlife Guide, or buy a reputable wildlife field guide to take with you.

Each animal has an English name, a scientific (latin) name, and a Swahili name. The latter is perhaps the most fascinating; the sound of the word often gives an accurate feel for the animal's character.

There aren't many places that I've been to where you can see everything on a 3-hour game drive; at Ngorongoro you can! - Africa safari expert Lauren Johansson
