Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park is a gem of a nature reserve just an hour's drive from Arusha town. Despite its proximity to the safari capital of Tanzania, this is actually the least frequented of northern Tanzania's parks, making it a treat for nature lovers who are interested in more than just seeing the Big Five.

Arusha National Park's 137km² territory ranges from open savannah through acacia scrublands to cloud- and rain-forest, and alpine vegetation similar to that of Mount Kilimanjaro. The reserve protects the slopes of Mount Meru, the fifth-highest peak in Africa at 4,556m, whose summit offers a stunning view of Kilimanjaro.

Though just as steep and almost as cold as climbing Kilimanjaro, climbing Meru is generally acknowledged to be more interesting and enjoyable, although not as prestigious. Meru is cheaper to climb, offers better natural scenery and carries less risk of altitude sickness than Kilimanjaro.

Because of the low density of tourism, the chances of seeing forest animals and, especially, primates like black and white colobus monkeys, are far better than on Kilimanjaro. Take similar kit to that needed for Kilimanjaro, although it is significantly warmer on the summit.

Hikers must be accompanied by a guide. Although Meru can be climbed in two days, it is far better to give it three days or more.

The alkaline Momelle lakes in Arusha National Park attract flocks of waders and waterbirds, while the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, a mini-Ngorongoro, is a must see. Arusha's mammal species include elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, leopard, various primates and very many antelope species.
