Central to the northern safari circuit, the region of Arusha thrums with the activity of safarigoers. Its eponymous capital at the foot of Mt Meru is frenetic with tourists and safari touts, and every second vehicle is a 4x4 safari rover.
The most popular destination in the Arusha region is surely the Ngorongoro Crater in its western part. The crater draws around a quarter of a million safari tourists annually. It's called the eighth natural wonder of the world for its incredible ecology, with thousands of game animals and five distinct habitats almost totally contained on the crater floor of a collapsed volcano.
The Arusha region varies greatly in altitude between 900 and 1600m above sea level. It is cut through the middle from north to south by the Rift Valley. The region is landlocked and has no navigable rivers.
