Bukoba is a small, thriving town located on the western shore of Lake Victoria. The town is the second largest Tanzanian port on the lake shore.
Bukoba is flat and compact little town, and the surrounding hills give it a sunken bowl shape.
The Kagera Region surrounding Bukoba is steeped in the histories of ancient and highly advanced kingdoms dating back some 2000 years. However, Bukoba was founded in a slightly more modest modern age. In 1890 a German doctor named Eduard Schnitzer (also known as Mehmet Emin Pasha) arrived on Lake Victoria's Western shore with the intention of establishing a German foothold in the region.
Since then the town has survived through its booming local coffee history and busy port. It is the major commercial centre and capital of the Kagera Region. Bukoba is a convenient stop for those travelling between Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. There is a ferry that travels from Bukoba to Mwanza via Kemondo Bay. There is also a small airport in Bukoba.
