Located in north-east Tanzania, the rock art of the Kondoa region is some of the oldest on the African continent. There are over 150 rock art sites scattered over a 2,336km2 area, most of which are in small caves or under overhanging slabs of sedimentary rock.
These natural rock shelters may have served as the canvasses for rock artists from anywhere between 400 to 4,000 years ago. There is much speculation over dating these works and to whom they should be attributed. The truth is no one is really sure who created them or when (some of the broadest estimates date them at 20,000 years).
Dates aside, these shelters remain inscribed on the consciousness of local people and are celebrated through age-old rituals and beliefs.
This archeological site was given World Heritage status in 2006.
