On the western bank of the Lukuledi Estuary is the rather small, run-down port of Lindi. On the 600 km coastal stretch between Dar es Salaam and Mtwara, Lindi features as the most prominent town. Lindi serves as the administrative capital of the Lindi Region.

Despite its somewhat mysterious past, present-day Lindi has a modern grid street layout and few buildings are higher than two storeys. The town centre comprises decaying colonial buildings and nothing much else of any interest.

The devastation caused by a cyclone that hit Lindi in the 1950s and the rise of Mtwara as the dominant port-city of the area have been the two main causes of Lindi's collapse.

There are a few beautiful beaches around Lindi Bay which make for a pleasant time, if you don't mind broken and neglected beach benches, and splinters. The bus station and football stadium are the main centres of activity; at the bus station reggae and drunken Congolese guitars slur happily into the early morning.
