The intriguingly named Mafia Island is a virtual unknown when compared with Zanzibar, and even with Pemba. Mafia receives a very small number of visitors, yet those who do visit usually return with the highest possible praises for the island. The island also has a rich history, a colourful culture and religious makeup, gorgeous natural scenery and diverse fauna as well as an incredibly rich marine life on the barrier reef that surrounds the main island.
Mafia may not be Zanzibar on the cultural and historical front, lacking anything like a Stone Town but its combination of superb eco-friendly upmarket accommodation (try Kinasi Lodge or Pole Pole), diving and snorkelling conditions that are among the best in the Indian Ocean, and a peaceful and hustle-free environment make it an ideal retreat for travellers who want to chill out in a luxurious and low-key paradise.
Mafia is also a destination with great potential for budget travellers seeking adventurous experiences off the beaten track - Mafia Island Lodge offers a more cost-conscious alternative to the more upmarket lodges.
Climate note: The period from October to the end of March is the best for diving. For non-divers the months between May and October offer the best weather (January to March is uncomfortably hot and humid). The heavy rains come in March and April, and again - but not as torrential - in October to mid-December. The entire coast is at high risk from malaria, and scuba divers need to consult malaria specialists about potential problems of mefloquine (Lariam/Mefliam) when diving.
