Greystoke Mahale is a tiny sanctuary set on a remote beach along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika. The camp stands at the base of the densely forested Mahale Mountains, home to the world's largest known population of chimpanzees.
There are no roads for miles so everything is done by foot or boat. A trek through the rainforest takes you to Mahale's endangered chimpanzees and other species of primate. Leopard, bushbuck, bushpig, and a variety of birds and butterflies can also be spotted. The waters are alive with over 250 species of tropical fish, and you can kayak along the lakeshore, snorkel or fish.
Back at the camp, you can unwind on the sandy beach or in one of the comfortable spaces the camp has to offer. The lodge stands out on the beach, and is a thatched Tongwe chief's hut. The upstairs area has 4 decks with panoramic views and offers a selection of rare books including a specialist primate library.
LocationGreystoke Mahale is situated in Mahale Mountains National Park, a mountainous forest island on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, and the lodge itself is situated on Kangwena beach on the edge of the lake at the base of the Mahale Mountains.
