The geography of Tanzania
Embraced by the eastern and western rift of the Great Rift Valley Tanzania is a country of vast plains, mountains and great lakes.
The map of Tanzania shows the great plains of the north east including the legendary Serengeti - home of the great wildebeest migrations - and the unique caldera that is the Ngorongoro Crater. Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, rises majestically from these plains.
The Tanzania Map shows Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi [Lake Nyasa] cupping the country from north to south along its western border. Boasting mountains and forests these areas are home to many primate species including chimpanzees.
The southern region of the country, as indicated on the map of Tanzania, supports some of Africa's most dramatic wilderness areas including Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park. The south is considered the cross-over from east to southern Africa in terms of vegetation and species distribution.
Tanzania occupies an area of almost a million square kilometers and has a coastline that stretches for 1,424km that includes the islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago.
