Mikindani is a sleepy and charming town in the Swahili architectural style; narrow roads lined with double-storeyed houses and overlooked by their balconies.
Although Mikindani was once among the most important ports on the Tanzanian coast, today it is just a quiet fishing village with an intricate history. A single morsel: David Livingstone set off from Mkindani on his last expedition into the African interior.
Located 10km north of the more economically successful Mtwara, Mikindani is nonetheless an appealing base for travellers, and certainly worth a visit.
