Mkomazi Game Reserve is located on the Kenyan border in northeast Tanzania. In fact, it borders Kenya's Tsavo National Park, and in the wet season large herds of elephant, oryx and zebra migrate between the parks. Thus ecologically interlinked, the two parks form an important savannah ecosystem, which is characterised by the semi-arid conditions in the Sahel arc.
The 3,701km2 Mkomazi Reserve is predominantly dry and vegetated mostly by savanna vegetation. It's pretty undeveloped for tourists, and doesn't have much in the way of accommodation by comparison with other Tanzanian game parks. Because it's not a national park, however, walking is allowed.
Mkomazi is home to the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard) and boasts 78 kinds of mammals and more than 400 bird species. The endangered African wild dog has also been introduced to the reserve.
