Availability of accommodation at Ngorongoro Crater can be a big stumbling block in planning your Ngorongoro safari, and a number of lodges have sprouted in the nearby town of Kairufu to cater for the high crater demand.
With their generally comfortable and friendly guesthouse ambience, many people enjoy the less dramatic and exclusive accommodation of Kairufu over the crater rim lodges.
Most of the lodges near the Ngorongoro Crater are located on coffee plantations. There's not much to do in Kairufu - one road bisects this small undeveloped town, surrounded by tropical hills that dip into cultivated valleys.
If you do choose to stay near Kairufu expect to travel an hour to the crater rim. From here it takes roughly another hour to descend into the crater.
We Recommend:
Gibbs Farm - Warm with a historical charm, Gibbs Farm is conveniently positioned halfway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Set on an organic coffee plantation and surrounded by gardens, the farm is a firm favourite for guests staying near the crater.
Plantation Lodge - 30 km from Ngorongoro Crater, Plantation Lodge is tucked away on a coffee plantation. With beautiful gardens and a very personal feel, the lodge makes for a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Ngorongoro Farmhouse - Designed as an old colonial farm with each room decorated using local rustic materials, Ngorongoro Farmhouse offers an imaginary journey to the early days of the farm.
