There are two major factors that make a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater one of the best wildlife experiences you could ever hope to embark on.

One, is the crater itself - a place of unparalleled wildlife and natural beauty, and second, our Ngorongoro Safaris are often combined with the attractions of its surrounding areas such as Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Manyara, the Masai Mara and, of course, the open plains of the Serengeti.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro Crater forms part of a much larger conservation area.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) includes the crater highlands (a long mountain range of volcanoes and calderas that rise from the eastern slope of the Great Rift Valley and run along the eastern edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area); Olduvai Gorge, and the alkaline lakes of Masek and Ntudu (technically part of the NCA but in fact located within the southern boundary of the Serengeti).

The Serengeti

Neighbouring the crater, the Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the world's most famous wilderness destination and home to the greatest concentration of wildlife on earth.

Travellers flock to the Serengeti to experience the annual wildebeest migration. Several million hooves kick up the Serengeti dust as they move purposefully in search of grazing pastures.

The migration is a ceaseless year-long journey punctuated with dramatic displays of nature's cruelty and beauty.

To fully absorb Africa's drama and magnificence your trip to Ngorongoro should ideally include a few days in the Serengeti.

Olduvai Gorge

The 50km long Olduvai Gorge is an archaeological site at which, in 1959, Dr Louis Leakey and his wife found humanoid remains of one of the earliest forms of man.

This long and dusty ravine is one of Africa's best-known archaeological sites and is located between the crater and the Serengeti.

There is a basic museum, situated on the archaeological site, overlooking the gorge.
