Ngorongoro Crater Conservancy » General Information » Overview

The Ngorongoro Crater is located in the north of Tanzania. The crater forms part of the much larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area - a UNESCO world heritage site that spans some 8,000km2.

The Ngorongoro Crater has one of the highest concentrations of large mammals in Africa. It is estimated that some 30,000 animals inhabit the crater and wildlife viewing is renowned as some of the best on offer in the world.

The gateway to the reserve, particularly if you're on a fly-in safari, is the city of Arusha, which lies 180km to the west of the crater.
