Birding is excellent in the Ngorongoro Crater and large flocks of flamingos inhabit Lake Magadi (the large soda lake in the south central area) giving its watery edges a pinkish tinge when seen from a distance. A variety of wonderful waterbirds can be found in the Mandusi Swamp area.

The grasslands that cover most of the crater floor serve as a playground for some striking ground birds. The world's heaviest flying bird - the kori bustard - flies somewhat ungraciously over the grasslands much to the dismay of local ostriches, who are simply to large to flyl.

Crowned cranes, migrant storks, and the rosythroated longclaw are sure to set birders hearts aflutter. The augur buzzard and the Egyptian vulture are the two most impressive and visible birds of prey, catching the thermals above the Ngorongoro Crater floor.

The Egyptian vulture is the only bird that uses tools to get to its food; you might be lucky enough to spot it practising its technique of using a stone to crack open ostrich eggs.
