Scrub heath, wide grasslands and dense evergreen montane forests cover the steep slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater.

The crater floor consists mainly of open grassy plains with various fresh and brackish water lakes, marshes, and swamps.

The Lerai and Laiyanai Forests, which are made up of acacia woodland, cover two portions of the crater floor.

The rest of the crater floor includes undulating plains covered in grass that shrivel almost into desert during times of severe drought.

The grass and shrub lands beside Lake Eyasi, which are virtually untouched by cultivation, are extremely rich and support very large animal populations.
