Unless you have your own vehicle, or spend a lot of money and charter a boat or light aircraft, there is only one way to get to Rubondo Island, and it means spending a week on there.

Every Monday morning at 08:00 the ferry leaves Mwanza for Nyamirembe. Sleep the night in Nyamirembe and hire a boat from the fisheries department for the trip to Rubondo Island National Park, where there is a camp site with two bandas (huts). Check on return times, but the ferry usually returns to Mwanza every Tuesday morning. With your own vehicle, or using very unreliable public transport, it is possible to drive to Nyamirembe and get a boat from there.

Rubondo is a great place for hiking (accompanied by an armed guard). Rubondo Island consists of dense forest and extensive wetlands, home to sitatunga, chimpanzees, elephant, incredible birdlife, hippos, crocs, giraffe, black and white colobus monkeys, roan antelope and a variety of small predators and other mammals. Take all your own supplies.
