The Serengeti National Park was created in 1951 and is now a world heritage site.
The park's success as a conservation area is largely due to the efforts of Professor Bernard Grzimek (pronounced "Jimek") and his son Michael. Professor Grzimek wrote a book and made a film about the area, called Serengeti Shall Not Die, recognised as one of the most important early nature conservation documentaries.
Michael Grzimek died in an airplane crash over the Serengeti at age 24, and he has been buried on the lip of the Ngorongro Crater. His epitaph reads: "He gave all he possessed for the wild animals of Africa, including his life."
