In Tanzania, your safaris mostly take place in a closed 4WD vehicles. This is in keeping with Tanzanian park rules and for your safety. Some lodges in private reserves offer open-sided vehicles and enjoy specific privileges such as off-raod driving and night drives - activities that are not allowed in the public areas of the Serengeti.

The Serengeti is not conducive to budget self-driving. You simply can't do justice to the migration without being guided by professionals who know the area and the animals well.
