Far less crowded than the rest of the Serengeti, the extreme north offers visitors the highlights of the Serengeti without the crowds.

From around August to October the migration heads into the extreme north and crosses the Mara River. If you're staying in the area at this time you will be privy to the most dramatic of all African images - millions of wildebeest and thousands of zebra and antelope plunging into the river and struggling to cross it before the predators move in.

Our recommended Extreme North accommodation:

Sayari Camp - This is a seasonal migration camp that follows the herds throughout the year. From June to September Sayari is set at the Mara River. This is the ideal place from which to watch the giant herds on the last stretch of their journey. Crossing the Mara River, they will rest briefly in the Masai Mara, before beginning the migration again.

Lemala Luxury Camp Serengeti - There are only 8 tents at this seasonal camp, thus creating a very intimate and personal atmosphere. Located on a hill in the north from June to October, Lemala is well-positioned for all the migration action - and the views are terrific.
