Serengeti National Park » Travel Guide » Ngorongoro Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) includes the crater highlands (a long mountain range of volcanoes and calderas that rise from the eastern slope of the Great Rift Valley and run along the eastern edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area); the Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, and the alkaline lakes of Masek and Ntudu (technically part of the NCA but located within the southern boundary of the Serengeti).

The Ngorongoro Crater

Two and a half million years old, the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most beautiful and surreal ecosystems on earth. Thousands of game animals roam inside this volcanic cauldron, desperately trying to avoid getting nabbed by Africa's densest population of predators.

As one of the wonders of the world, a trip to the crater is often the highlight of any East Africa safari. Just when you thought you'd seen it all on a Serengeti safari, a trip into the crater will show you more.
