In December through March the southern Serengeti is where all the action is; the great herds move constantly in search of fresh pastures and water.
Hot on their heels are Africa's great predators: lion, cheetah, leopard, spotted hyena and wild dog, all hoping for an easy meal - and it doesn't get much easier than a newborn wildebeest calf.
The calving season sees some 8 000 babies born a day and yet only half of them will survive for longer than four months so if you don't mind seeing the thrill of the hunt, then this is a remarkable time to visit.
Read our guide on important migration months to time your visit to perfection.
What better way to view the land of endless plains on a Serengeti than to take to the sky on a balloon safari? From up high you can fully appreciate the magnitude of this wildlife destination - a thrilling Serengeti travel experience.
Survey the open plains and watch the abstracted movements of animals across a bizarre and beautiful landscape. After your flight, set down in the middle of the bush and enjoy a five-star champagne breakfast.
Drive into the thick of the migration and have your vehicle surrounded by thousands of wildebeest and zebra. Watch as they approach you, then split off and pass your flanks, circumnavigating your vehicle without so much as a moment's hesitation.
Sitting in the middle of the migration is a humbling and electrifying travel experience - and the opportunity to see nature at its grandest.
