Zanzibar Island or, more correctly, Unguja Island, is the larger of two islands located off the eastern coast of Tanzania north of Dar es Salaam, which together make up the autonomous region of Zanzibar. The other, smaller island is Pemba, which lies to the north of Unguja.
Unguja island is home to Zanzibar City on its western coast. This is one of the most exotic and exciting destinations in Tanzania, home to the World Heritage Site of Stone Town, the city's old quarter.
Like many Indian Ocean islands, Unguja has a beautiful shoreline and some excellent snorkelling spots around its coast. Its people are relaxed and friendly, and its history is rich and fascinating, having been influenced by Arabs, Britons, Indians, Persians, Portuguese as well as Africans from the mainland.
