As is the case with most islands, the Zanzibar islands have a smaller avifauna than what you'll find on the Tanzanian mainland. However, there are species of birds on Pemba that occur nowhere else in the world.
Zanzibar (Unguja) has about 220 species, while Pemba has slightly fewer. Of these, roughly 35 species have been added by human intervention, a reaction to growing tourism and its expectations and needs. Although similar in size and geography, the two islands have a different birdlife upon comparison. Unguja has woodpeckers, shrikes and bulbuls, all of which are absent on Pemba. However, there are species of green pigeon, scops owl, white-eye and sunbird that are unique to Pemba.
The birdwatching areas of Zanzibar are made up mostly of gardens, ponds and grasslands.
