Although Stone Town is considered one of Africa's safest cities, some areas should be avoided at night. Beaches are unsafe after dark, and the waterfont between Kelele Square and Suicide Alley is often presided over by a number of suspicious characters.

A general rule in Zanzibar is to avoid unpopulated, dimly-lit areas at night. For peace of mind, officially approved ID carrying guides can be hired, but there is a small rash of fake ID carrying locals that abuse this policy. Hotels will advise guests of the safest routes in their locality at night.
