Getting to Zanzibar Island is easy enough as there are several daily flights and ferries from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
There are also daily inter-island flights between Pemba Isand, Tanga (one of Tanzania's northerly seaside towns) and Stone Town. There's also a boat that operates between Zanzibar and Pemba a few times a week.
Once on Zanzibar Island, there's a reasonably good network of minibuses called dala-dalas driven by locals. These are as slow as they are cheap and crowded. Private minivans, although pricier, will get you to wherever you want to go as quickly as the roads allow. Taxi and motorbike hire is also pretty reasonable.
There are fewer options for getting around Pemba than on Zanzibar Island, but travel is still relatively easy. Public transport will get you to some parts of the island but no further.
There are also Zanzibar flights between some of the islands to help you get around.
