Embarking on some underwater exploration close to the shore will reward you with a colourful setting of hard and soft corals swaying in warm turquoise waters. Further out, you'll encounter manta rays, dolphins, barracudas, sharks and turtles.
Although visibility isn't as reliable as in other diving hotspots around the world, diving is one of Zanzibar's main attractions, and Mnemba is its crowning glory. If you're here specifically to dive, remember that you'll need to travel for up to an hour to reach most of the sites, and that a number of the more exciting sites are drift dives.
The mammals, fish and plant species that make up Zanzibar's marine life are typical of those found around other Indian Ocean islands such as Mozambique, Mauritius and the Seychelles.
