Mnemba Island is a tiny, privately owned island about a kilometre from Zanzibar Island. It forms part of the Mnemba Atoll, which is much larger but mostly submerged in the Indian Ocean. The island is vintage beach paradise - white coral sand, wild coastal bush and a small forest of casuarina trees.

The reefs just offshore are excellent snorkelling and diving spots, and there are large coral cliffs 40 metres deep, that are accessible from the luxurious Mnemba Island Lodge. This is one of the few places in the world where you can dive with whale sharks, the world's largest fish.

Although Mnemba Island is privately owned, the reef is open to everyone.

Mnemba Island is one of the best scuba-diving sites in Zanzibar and a popular one - at times you'll find a fleet of dive boats moored close to the island.

The island is also a nesting site for the endangered green turtle.
