The best way to shop in Zanzibar is to wander the backstreets of Stone Town, especially near the Old Fort. Haggling with local salesmen is expected and can lead to some memorable holiday encounters.

Souvenirs and spices are what you will probably be taking home. Local spices are a must, and saffron is remarkably cheap.

Souvenirs to buy include the usual African curios such as drums and carvings. As is customary in Africa, curios are often sourced from other African countries, a fact that may take a little romance out of the experience.

This blow is softened by the fact that most items are beautiful and cheap, words not often found sitting beside one another in most marketplaces. Clothing and fabric are a Zanzibar specialty. Kangas, kikios, and kofia caps are all items you will come to know, admire and most likely acquire.
