Zanzibar is largely a conservative Muslim society and locals can take offence to scantily dressed foreigners. Women should avoid sleeveless tops and low-cut necklines. Slacks, skirts, or at least knee-length shorts, should be worn when walking in public.

Muslim culture requires men to be covered from their shoulders to their knees, so baggy surf shorts are acceptable but you should keep your t-shirt on in public too.

Normal swimwear is fine for the beach, but not if you're going to wear it into the local fishing villages.

Islamic sensibilities aside, the dress codes for establishments in Zanzibar are quite relaxed, and even the smartest of hotels and restaurants do not require formal wear.

In terms of practicality, clothing should be light and loose fitting for the day, with something a little warmer for the evening. A rain jacket is a good item to pack, even if you're visiting in the dry season.

Sandals or slops are useful for walking out to sea in as some beaches have stretches of coral or rock to walk over.
