Located just north of Matemwe's main lodge, on the north-eastern part of Zanzibar, right opposite the Mnemba Atoll, lies Matemwe Retreat.
Built by local craftsmen, Matemwe Retreat used local materials wherever possible. Most furniture is made of locally produced coconut wood and soft furnishings are locally produced by women groups. The sun, through Matemwe Retreat's solar system, supplies hot water to the lodge.
Matemwe offers a wide range of activities that can be enjoyed in and around the lodge or elsewhere on the Zanzibar Island, with various watersports such as diving, snorkeling and kayaking. Diving sites are suitable for all levels of experience. Be amazed by the sheer range of fish species to be found in the waters.
Guests can also enjoy many other activities available, such as local fishing trips on traditional boats, guided walks to the local village and fish market, visits to the neighbouring village and Zanzibar tours. Or you can just unwind and relax with a massage or beauty treatment.
Matemwe Retreat offers candle-lit private beach dinners under the stars, champagne breakfasts, honeymoon suites, aromatic massage oils and special packages for honeymooners - making your Zanzibar experience romantic and special.
If you are an early bird, early morning, tea and/or coffee and cookies will be served at your Matemwe Retreat veranda.
Breakfast is served on the veranda of the room, without the need to disturb you lazing in the bed. It offers a wide choice of fruit juices, fruits, yoghurt, cereals, pancakes and full English breakfast.
Every day the Matemwe Retreat manager or chef will stop by to discuss lunch and dinner preferences of the day. Lunches are buffets with a mix of African and European flavours, while dinners offer a choice of main courses between fish, meat and vegetarian, with fresh seafood being the absolute specialty of the house.
The catch of the day is served in the privacy of the garden or roof terrace or you can enjoy dinner at Matemwe's main lodge.
Drinks are served in the room or on the beach and you can receive massages and beauty treatments on the comfort of your roof terrace.
Each of the 4 rooms at Matemwe Retreat are on the ground floor (150 m2 including verandas) and feature a spacious veranda, private cocktail bar, an air-conditioned bedroom, a bathroom with double sinks, a shower and a bath overlooking the Indian Ocean.
On the private roof terrace (60 m2), you will find a plunge pool (10 m2) and sun and shade decks, while in front of the rooms, there is a small beach that is only used by the guests of the retreat.
Full room service, with drinks, private dining, massages and beauty treatments in your room are available.
