overview

Experience the pristine world of early explorers on a 4-day, low-impact canoe and fly camping safari through unspoilt African wilderness. Far from the swarms of game vehicles further south, spend a few days gently paddling up the Selinda Spillway surrounded by open plains and riverine forests.

This meandering waterway connects the Linyanti Swamps to the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana and is home to roan and sable antelope, plenty of hippo and large herds of elephant. Free of roads and human settlements, the Selinda provides a truly remote and wild experience for the adventurous spirit.

By exploring the Reserve on foot, you tread quietly and unlock the gift of a thrilling, up-close and personal perspective on the wilderness.

Your party of explorers is limited to eight travellers with three support staff and a guide who is passionate about sharing his knowledge and love of the bush with you. Each evening, the staff erect a very civilised fly camp at a scenic riverbank location; each tent features a comfortable bed and thoughtful touches, like a hot water bottle. After an indulgent shower, join your fellow travellers around the campfire to sip on sundowners before tucking into the remarkable feast prepared in a rugged, wood-fired kitchen. Before the happy fatigue of a day well seized takes you off to bed, gather around the campfire to toast marshmallows and trade stories with your companions.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Paddle the serene Selinda Spillway

Your canoe adventure begins as you arrive at Selinda Airstrip with a short briefing and introduction to your guide and support staff. The excitement mounts as you take a short walk to the Selinda Spillway and board your mode of transport for the next few days, a sturdy, 18ft canoe.

Each canoe is comfortably equipped with two cushioned seats and a backrest. The pace of paddling is gentle, giving you the time and space to appreciate the pristine wilderness around you. There is no set distance to be covered on the first day and your guide maintains the leisurely pace until the light begins to fade.

Your support staff sets up camp on a suitable site along the riverbank. Their practiced efficiency ensures that you are sipping a sundowner at the campfire, tantalized by mouth-watering aromas from the cook’s preparations, and mesmerized by a brilliantly coloured Delta sunset.

Day 2

Explore a pristine Eden

Rise early, awakened by the dawn chorus of birds, to savour a steaming cup of coffee over a light breakfast. Steer your canoe back out onto the water for a full day of paddling.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at a tranquil, sheltered spot with the option of stretching your legs on a game walk. Your guide keeps an eye out for the spoor and scat that alert him to opportunities to track wild dog and other rare game.

Camp is set up in another charming riverside location at the end of the day. Enjoy the campfire camaraderie and a freshly prepared meal before retiring to your tent, where the gentle murmurs of the bush lull you to sleep.

Day 3

Toast marshmallows under the stars

Rise to the delicious smell of breakfast being prepared on an open fire. Fuel up before a full day of paddling as your guide shares his fascinating insights into the diverse animal, bird and insect life encountered along the river. Around midday, you tuck into a picnic lunch in another scenic spot.

Spend your final evening trading campfire stories over toasted marshmallows dipped in Amarula (a deliciously creamy liqueur made from the fruit of the African marula tree).

Day 4

Homeward bound

After breakfast, paddle until midday before coming ashore at Selinda Camp and transferring to Selinda Airstrip by game vehicle. Spending the night at either Selinda or Zarafa is recommended for a little pampering before starting your journey home.

Though you must return to the modern world, you take precious memories with you: paddling through a pod of hippo, heart racing, or laughing at the boisterous antics of springhares at play. Whenever your heart yearns for a taste of Eden, your anecdotes and photographs transport you back to the serenity of Selinda.
