Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Warm to the elegance of classic Cape Town

Arrive at Cape Town International Airport and collect your rental car. A short drive along the N2 highway and past the city centre on your way to Camps Bay. Here, between the shadow of the Twelve Apostles mountain range and the undulating Atlantic, is The Marly Boutique Hotel, which is within striking distance of the pristine Blue Flga beach.

The Marly is a modern hotel that boasts idyllic seascape views, plenty of terraces to soak up the sun, not one but two spas and a restaurant that prides itself on innovative Japanese cuisine. It is the perfect base from which to explore the Mother City and provides a welcoming haven to which to return every evening.

Days 2-4

Surrender to the charms of the Cape Peninsula

Soaring Table Mountain forms the backdrop to Cape Town, flanked to either side by Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head. Mark your stay at the foot of this natural wonder of the world with an exhilarating ride by cable car to its summit or hike along one of its many trails.

Soak up the sun on fashionable Clifton Fourth Beach or pack a picnic and take to the verdant lawns of the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. But wherever, or however, you fall in love with Cape Town, be sure to cement it with a drive via Chapman’s Peak along the Atlantic coastline to Cape Point. Carved out of the mountainside through a narrow ledge with surf pounding hundreds of metres below, Chapman’s Peak Drive is a heart-stopping experience and one of the most breathtakingly beautiful marine drives in the world.

Return to the city via False Bay, with a stop-over to visit the thousand-strong colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach, and bring the day to a tranquil finish with a sundowner cruise from the V&A Waterfront into the waters of enchanted Table Bay.

Day 5

Be thrilled on safari

Return your car to Cape Town International Airport and board your scheduled flight to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport, with an air charter transfer to Skukuza Airstrip in the Kruger National Park. Here a safari vehicle will be standing by to transport you directly to Kirkman’s Kamp to arrive in time for the afternoon game drive.

Take a moment to unwind…

You are in Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, the birthplace of southern Africa’s sustainable wildlife tourism industry. Named after the Sabie and Sand Rivers that flow through the area, the reserve shares an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, its vast and free-ranging wildlife population passing unhindered between them. An authentic 1920’s homestead - with old-world charm and impeccable service - Kirkman’s Kamp evokes a nostalgia of its own: imagine games of croquet, afternoon tea and sundowners on the lawn.

Settle into your cottage with its private verandah and claw-foot bath, and freshen up for your game drive. Beginning in the late afternoon, and lasting through sundowners into the early evening – with special spotlights highlighting the cries of hyena and seeking out the prowl of predatory cats - return to camp for a romantic dinner served under the stars. A fire will be crackling in the African boma, melting its warmth into your heart. Linger over coffee or pudding and, with the laughter of newfound friends echoing beyond the clink of the evening’s final toasts, stroll off to bed.

Days 6-7

Experience exceptional Big 5 game viewing

Night sounds segue subtly into birdsong and with the first light of day comes a tap at your door. With hot coffee and freshly-baked rusks to sustain you, your ranger will discuss your viewing hopes for the day; this is Big 5 territory so you could spot lion, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo. The chances are also good that you will see an ever-elusive leopard, as Sabi Sand Game Reserve is known for prolific sightings of these beautiful cats. Set out in an open 4x4 vehicle in the company of your ranger and his dedicated team, and so it begins: the next two days will reveal to you an Africa that stretches back to eons past.

Return to Kirkman's Kamp for a well-earned breakfast of fruit platters, delicious cheese and a selection of hearty dishes, which you can work off later on a walk through Little 5 territory: spot the diminutive ant-lion, elephant shrews, rhinoceros beetles, buffalo weavers and the black-and-yellow-spotted leopard tortoise.

Return to camp for lunch overlooking the Sand River, followed by a refreshing dip in the pool, and enjoy a siesta before afternoon tea. Discuss with your ranger your hopes for the next game drive that will last through sundowners into the night…

Day 8

Relax in style in Johannesburg

Enjoy a final early-morning game drive before transferring back to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport for your connecting flight to Johannesburg, and your overnight stay at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel.

Based in the very upscape neighbourhood of Sandton, which is packed with elegant restaurants, boutiques, galleries, museums and malls, Fairlawns is a convenient stop-over. Hard on the heels of your Sabi Sand safari with its rousing succession of early-morning starts and sundowner game drives, this is your chance for a quiet night in. Enjoy a few laps in the sparkling swimming pool, unwind in the spa or just soak in the tub.

Day 9

Be charmed by ‘The Grand Old Lady of the Falls’

Board your flight to Zimbabwe, with Victoria Falls Airport less than two hours’ flying time from Johannesburg. Here a representative will transfer you to the Victoria Falls Hotel, a gracious Edwardian pile located within view of Victoria Falls and fittingly known as ‘The Grand Old Lady of the Falls.’

Traditionally called Mosi-oa-Tunya – ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ – Victoria Falls is a breath-taking sight. The entire width of the Zambezi River plummets in a vast single torrent into the raging gorges below, while immediately facing it, soaring out of the steam, is a wall of sheer basalt capped by emerald rain forest. Steel yourself for the pathway that runs along the edge of this rainforest: you will be caught in the rainbow-making spray and deafened by its roar. As you sit back later and relax on Stanley’s Terrace at the Grand Old Lady of the Falls, with her white-gloved waiters serving you high tea, you will be glad you walked the precipice.

Days 10-11

Rise to the challenge of ‘the Smoke that Thunders’

Victoria Falls is Africa’s adventure capital. Over the next two days experience it in full. Take to the skies with a qualified pilot for a microlight flight over the Falls, with wing-mounted cameras to capture the moment. And then leap off Victoria Falls Bridge - attached, of course, to a bungee cord - for a 111-metre scream never to be forgotten. Or launch yourself onto a rollercoaster ride from just below the Falls on a rubber ‘duck’ along the white-water rapids of Batoka Gorge. And then pick yourself up and follow an ancient game trail on an elephant-back safari. Finally, toast the end to a perfect day on a sunset cruise down the Zambezi River.

Day 12

Reach journey's end

Enjoy a final breakfast buffet at the Jungle Junction at The Victoria Falls Hotel with its excellent selection of smoked salmon, ham or roast beef with your eggs (benedict, scrambled or sunny-side-up) before transferring back to Victoria Falls Airport to continue with your journey home, a thousand memories to have forever.
