overview

Kick off this idyllic 10-day tour in Kenya’s capital where you enjoy a night at Nairobi Tented Camp in the country’s oldest reserve – Nairobi National Park – which is set against the prominent cityscape that forms an impressive backdrop. Here, you encounter plentiful wildlife on 4x4 game drives and visit a world-famous elephant rescue and rehabilitation programme.

Your next destination – Bataleur Camp – is set on the western border of the Masai Mara National Reserve where Out of Africa’s most famous Great Migration scene was filmed. You are accommodated in a shingle-roofed tent adjoined by a furnished private deck overlooking the game-rich plains. If your visit coincides with the Migration, bear witness to thousands of zebra and wildebeest traversing the plains in search of fresh grazing lands. Walking safaris introduce you to the plants and small animals that inhabit the reserve while spotlit night drives uncover the Mara’s intriguing nocturnal wildlife. Hot-air balloon rides over the reserve in the soft light of dawn provide renewed perspective of the vast terrain and the opportunity to spot large herds from high above.

From the ancient Mara plains to an exotic tropical retreat, Desroches Island Resort offers glorious beaches and sparkling waters that teem with extraordinary marine life. Enjoy activities ranging from sunbathing on white-sand beaches to swimming in the Indian Ocean’s warm waters. Take a guided nature walk around the island and discover its fascinating flora and fauna before enjoying a leisurely cycle or boat cruise. Superb diving and snorkelling can be enjoyed on the nearby reef. Delicious island-inspired cuisine is served on the beach or at the island’s elegant seaside signature restaurant while specially arranged in-suite dining and candlelit meals on the beach are a treat for honeymooners and romantics alike.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Giraffes & skyscrapers

On your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you are transferred to your overnight stay at Nairobi Tented Camp within the city’s national park. Aside from being Kenya’s oldest official reserve, Nairobi National Park is the largest protected area in the world within such close proximity of a city centre.

Enjoy an expertly guided 4x4 game drive on the reserve or visit the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage – one of the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation programmes responsible for hand-raising over 150 infant elephants before reintegrating them into the wild. Your authentic canvas tent is equipped with an en suite bathroom where you can enjoy log-heated showers prepared by the camp’s friendly staff. Snug sheep-skin rugs cover the floor to create a cosy bush refuge and inside you have the choice between low-wattage LED lighting and the romance of gas lanterns. Adjoining your spacious suite, a furnished verandah overlooks the thick acacia forest and makes an idyllic place to watch a crimson African sunset light up the sky.

Days 2-4

Mara memories

After breakfast you are transferred to Bataleur Camp on the western border of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Nestled in a cool forest at the base of the Oloololo escarpment, this stunning camp is located where Out of Africa’s most famous Migration scene was filmed. This opulent safari camp comprises spacious en suite shingle-roofed tents with wooden floors that are adjoined by furnished private decks overlooking the sprawling plains of Kenya’s most famous reserve. The palette of muted gold and natural tones combine with richly textured fabrics to create an elegant and serene safari retreat.

Occurring annually between May and October, the Great Migration promises a premium game-viewing experience with the chance to spot thousands of green-seeking wildebeest and zebra. Also encounter the Big 5 during early morning and late afternoon game drives guided by skilful tracker-and-ranger teams with a wealth of knowledge to share. Walking safaris provide an intimate portrait of the land while spotlit night drives uncover the Mara’s rich bouquet of nocturnal wildlife. Sit still and soak up the relentless beauty of the Mara at a scenic spot over a sundowner at the end of the afternoon game drive. Or early-risers could take a dawn hot-air balloon ride over the diverse habitats of swamp, forest and open savannah while admiring the meandering Mara River that bisects the reserve before sitting down to a glorious bush breakfast on the plains.

From the expansive verandah overlooking the game-rich plains to the sapphire swimming pool and elegantly appointed communal areas, Bataleur exudes a distinct contemporary feel combined with quietly attentive service. Relax in the comfortable lounge kept warm in the cool winter months by a roaring fireplace. When the weather is warm, take refreshing dips in the pool between bouts of reading and sun-worshipping. With a team of well-trained therapists at hand, wellness treatments in the comfort and privacy of your suite are an indulgence which should not be missed. Pan-African cuisine is served in scenic locations around the camp where staff take great pleasure in arranging secluded, candlelit dinners under the twinkling stars or sumptuous bush breakfasts.

Days 5-9

Dreaming of Desroches

This morning you are transferred by light airplane back to Nairobi from where you catch a flight to Seychelles and connect with a charter to Desroches Island Resort. Surrounded by white-sand beaches and a protected reef that teems with extraordinary marine life, your breezy suite on this far-flung island is the epitome of comfort and boasts superb sea views and direct beach access. It is up to you how active you would like to be while on the island. Indulge in precious relaxation time or enjoy a host of activities which range from sunbathing on sun-kissed sands between refreshing dips in the Indian Ocean, to guided nature walks and scenic cycling tours. Boat cruises also form part of the barefoot-luxury experience on Desroches and sunset strolls along the beachfront are sure to take your breath away.

There are a variety of motorised and non-motorised water sports available along with superb diving to be enjoyed on the nearby reef. Discover caves, swim-troughs and underwater labyrinths inhabited by a luminous frenzy of cichlids as well as numerous sharks and rays.

Delicious island-inspired cuisine is served on the beach or at the white-clothed tables of the island’s elegant seaside restaurant. Drawing inspiration from across the globe its mouth-watering menu includes some traditional dishes as well as more Western-style options. Private in-suite dining and candlelit meals on the beach are both romantic options for lovers and honeymooners alike. The barmen on the island take mixology seriously so do not miss out on the tall and colourful cocktails which are served all day at the bar or wherever you happen to put your feet up.

Take self-indulgence to the next level at the Escape Spa which offers a full range of beauty treatments to be relished in the comfort of your own suite or with the sea-scent in the air as you lie on the beach beneath the swaying coconut palms.
