Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Cape Town

Arrive at Cape Town International Airport and collect your rental car for the 30-minute drive into central Cape Town and along Kloof Nek Road, between the soaring edifices of Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. This will bring you into Camps Bay, a breath-taking moment, as the sparkling expanse of the Atlantic Ocean and the majestic peaks of the Twelve Apostles mountain range unfold before you.

Camps Bay Retreat Boutique Hotel is your home-from-home for the next four nights. A forested hideaway on the lower slopes of Lion's Head, and only moments from the beach, this luxurious accommodation has the perfect balance between privacy and proximity to all Cape Town’s attractions.

Settle into your suite and step out onto your deck with its mountain views, the forest and ocean lying beyond. Glen Beach is within walking distance of the hotel, as are Clifton’s flawless four coves and Camps Bay’s beachfront promenade. One of Cape Town’s most fashionable destinations, find a table outside at any one of its bars or bistros overlooking Camps Bay’s palm-fringed beach and relax with a sundowner as the evening crowds converge on its restaurants and the pace picks up for the night.

Days 2-4

Fall in love with the Mother City

Set off on a tour of the Atlantic coastline via Chapman’s Peak Drive to Cape Point, one of the most beautiful marine drives in the world. Explore the Cape of Good Hope National Park and then return to the city via False Bay, with a stop-over to see the endangered African penguins at Boulders Beach.

Follow the pathways and majestic trails of world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and then visit leafy Constantia Valley, with its magnificent vineyards and historic estates stretching up the south-eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Explore iconic Groot Constantia and picnic on the lawns of Buitenverwachting, sampling some of the finest wines South Africa has to offer.

Take a scenic drive along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard, from Hout Bay via Mouille Point to the V&A Waterfront, and lunch at one of the harbour’s quayside restaurants before booking a cruise to Robben Island to visit Nelson Mandela’s former prison cell. Finally, pack a picnic and bring your stay in Cape Town to a spectacular close with a hike up Lion’s Head to its summit, for a magnificently rewarding sunset over the Mother City - salute the rising moon with a well-deserved glass of red wine you picked up earlier.

Days 5-7

Experience the magic of Sun City

After breakfast, return to Cape Town International Airport for your scheduled 2-hour flight to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. Collect your hire car and travel 160km to Sun City, your next port of call.

Sun City is widely considered Africa’s top resort: multiple hotels are surrounded by fantastical suspension bridges, exotic gardens, waterfalls and swimming pools. You are staying at the luxurious Cascades Hotel, an elegant and sophisticated retreat within the high-energy ambit of a got-it-all resort. Settle into your lavish air-conditioned suite overlooking the pool beach, gardens and golf courses beyond, and take in the horizon, which is quintessentially African. You are in the best of both worlds.

Cross over the Bridge of Time to the Valley of the Waves and surf the outrageous Roaring Lagoon with its hydraulic succession of mechanised breakers; hurtle down the near-vertical water slide of the Temple of Courage; sway across the suspension bridge to the Maze of the Lost City; or simply soak up the sun, cocktail in hand, at the Royal Bath swimming pool beside the Amphitheatre. And if you are keen on an altogether different delivery, tee off on the championship Lost City Golf Course designed by the legendary Gary Player, mindful of the Nile crocodiles at the 13th hole water hazard!

Days 8-9

Thrill to a genuine Big 5 Safari

After breakfast, leave Sun City behind you, and drive to neighbouring Pilanesberg National Park. Set within the slopes of an extinct volcanic crater, and teeming with game, malaria-free Pilanesberg has all that it takes for a thrilling Big 5 safari.

Hidden amongst the trees of an old tamboti forest, and overlooking a busy waterhole, your home for the next two nights is the Black Rhino Game Lodge. Anticipate a prime game-viewing experience, with your patio doors opening out directly into the forest, allowing you glimpses of elephants on their way to a nearby waterhole.

Monkeys chatter in the canopy above you; it is dawn. Wake up to rusks and freshly-brewed coffee, and set off with your ranger on an early-morning game drive through the rolling hills of the Black Rhino Reserve. Home to excellent stocks of Africa's Big 5, you are guaranteed exceptional game viewing opportunities, with two game drives a day, before sunrise and at sunset. Kudu and eland roam freely; a herd of buffalo will cross your path. Tonight, as you drift into sleep in the absolute dark, after dinner beside the fire overlooking the waterhole, the distant roaring of lions tempers your dreams.

Day 10

Say goodbye, with a promise to return

After breakfast, take a leisurely drive back to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, return your hire-car and check-in for your flight home, laden with both memories and mementos. This marks the end of your South African adventure, with a promise to return for other sunrises over an ancient land.
