overview

Lake Malawi is Africa’s third-largest and second-deepest lake, home to the world’s greatest number of fish species in a single body of freshwater, including more than a thousand types of kaleidoscopic cichlids. Named ‘the Lake of Stars’ by early explorer David Livingstone because of the twinkling of fishermen’s lanterns on its surface, today is a playground for water-sports lovers and a national reserve.

Begin this 9-day tour at Mvuu Camp in Malawi’s Liwonde National Park where you spend two full days tracking the Big 5 along the fertile banks of the Shire River. Then transfer to owner-run Danforth Lodge in Cape Maclear where you enjoy two nights drinking in stunning lake and island views between revelling in a host of water-based activities. Set sail from Cape Maclear to Monkey Bay on fully-catered catamaran Mufasa where you will stay onboard for two blissful nights, enjoying scuba diving, fishing and visiting remote and unspoilt sites along the way.

A perfect combination of land and lake, this holiday is ideal for adventure lovers who want to get off the beaten track and experience one of Africa’s perfectly-formed, warm-water jewels.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

A welcome to the warm heart of Africa

You are met on your arrival at the airport in Blantyre and driven to Mvuu Camp, which is nestled cosily on the banks of the Shire River in Malawi’s lush Liwonde National Park. After you exploring the camp’s facilities, enjoy a lavish 4-course dinner before retiring to rest in anticipation of your forthcoming Mvuu experience.

Days 2-4

Where the wild things are

This classic tented safari camp is situated in Liwonde National Park, which is home to the Big 5 and an enormous diversity of birdlife. Being well-watered by the Shire River, elephants, hippo and crocodiles are seen at the camp regularly. The 12 lavish stone-and-canvas tented chalets are incredibly spacious and include a covered verandah with comfortable hammock and outside shower. Make yourself at home at the camp’s main communal lounge, dining and bar areas, which are built on tall wooden stilts and overlook the banks of the life-giving river. Relax with an iced drink and watch hippos and crocodiles cavort below you while the swimming pool offers respite from the African heat.

In addition to the impressive number of animals you may encounter at the camp, morning and evening game drives present the opportunity to see one of Malawi’s premier wildlife parks in all its glory. For another game viewing alternative, set out on a boating safari along the Shire River and significantly lengthen your birding life-list. Wake up at dawn and take a guided nature walk for a fantastic opportunity to get close to iridescent insects and plants often missed from a 4x4. Immerse yourself in Malawian culture with a visit to Ndovu Cultural Village where you might learn how to weave a customary grass mat or prepare a traditional dish made from maize meal. Take a sunset boat cruise with your favourite drink packed in the cooler box – the most idyllic way to bid farewell to a perfect day on the Shire.

Days 5-6

Lakeside nirvana

After sharing breakfast at Mvuu with the hippos and crocodiles you are transferred from Liwonde National Park to Danforth Lodge on the southern shore of Lake Malawi. Surrounded by the crystal waters that typify the Lake Malawi National Park, the elegant lodge is an 8-bedroom stay-over that provides a charming lakeside sanctuary for water sports enthusiasts and sun worshippers alike. Built directly on the beach, the lodge boasts incomparable views out over Lake Malawi and to Thumbi West Island in the distance. Rooms are comfortable and spacious with well-appointed en suite bathrooms with the essential amenities necessary for active beach lodge life. Between fun-filled activities out on the water, spend your time relaxing in a hammock or sprawled on the lodge’s shady lawns or on the silky-sand beach. Have a dip in the sparkling infinity pool, a stone’s throw from the glorious lake.

With Africa’s third-largest lake on your room’s doorstep, the highlight of any stay at Danforth is the sheer number of fresh water-based thrills to enjoy. From snorkelling and swimming, to water skiing and wakeboarding, exciting water-sports are available at this spectacular beach lodge. The surrounding fresh water marine reserve has more than 20 different dive sites within a 2.5km radius, many of which are widely regarded as among the very best in the world. Snorkel among pristine coral reefs where psychedelic cichlids dart between underwater foliage. While scuba diving, stalk long-whiskered catfish which lie a little deeper at around 25m. Night-time dives start just before sunset and allow you to see nocturnal dolphin fish, rays and sleepy cichlids. The lodge’s on-site PADI scuba diving centre and instructor ensures that you are totally prepared for any diving you wish to do from the lodge.

Days 7-8

Smooth sailing

After your two nights at Danforth Lodge, you hop aboard its very own ocean-going yacht for a 2-night sailing expedition to Monkey Bay. The Mufasa is a fully-equipped and crewed 38-foot catamaran sleeping 10 people in understated elegance. While aboard the lavish boat on the tranquil waters of the Lake of Stars, enjoy scuba diving, fishing and visits to fascinatingly remote and unspoilt sites. Visit Monkey Bay harbour and snorkel at Boadzulu Island and Mzinzi Bay. The onboard chef prepares both locally and internationally inspired cuisine for all meals and, if the weather permits, a delicious fresh fish barbeque is prepared in a secluded bay. Between meals, sit out on the deck and watch islands pass by, familiarise yourself with exotic bird species, and solve the world’s problems with the clear mind that only fresh air of this magnitude can induce.

Day 9

Farewell to Malawi

After breakfast back at Danforth Lodge your driver takes you back to the airport to board your international flight back home. Sitting in your seat on the plane waiting to leave African soil, you close your eyes and fondly reflect on your memories and experiences of the past days: Lake Malawi’s impossibly clear and bright blue waters, boldly parting its waters on a 38-foot catamaran and swimming with thousands of fish on Paradise Island, to name just a few. As your plane takes off and you soar into the sky, you realise your departure is only a physical one. You have taken a small piece of Africa’s warm heart away with you, and you will cherish it forever.
