Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Karibu Kenya

On arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by a representative and transferred to the Southern Sun Mayfair Hotel. Set on two hectares of landscaped gardens, this is the ideal place to relax and unwind in preparation for your safari.

Days 2-3

A Samburu adventure

You depart Nairobi in the morning and, as you leave the city, the landscape gradually gives way to villages and farmland, and then to grand, wide-open Rift Valley scenery. The Aberdare Mountain Range comes into range, juxtaposed by the bulk of Mount Kenya that dominates the view.

Arriving at Samburu National Reserve at around midday, a short game drive delivers you to Samburu Intrepids Camp. Located high on the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River, this delightful lodge has fantastic views over the water to where animals often come to drink. Enjoy a delicious lunch while taking in the view, then discover your suite to settle in before your afternoon’s game drive.

The concession is one of extreme scenic beauty, with vast sweeping vistas leading to the mountains of the Northern Frontier shimmering in the distance. It is also a harsh landscape where the majority of animals depend on the river to survive. It is here you will discover the ‘Special 5’ of this region: the endangered Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx and the peculiar gerenuk antelope. Game drives allow you to encounter the area’s wildlife, while a walking safari with your Samburu guide will make the intricacies of the wilds come alive. Cultural experiences with the Samburu are a highlight, where you visit a manyatta and learn about a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Day 4

On the shores of Lake Naivasha

You depart Samburu Intrepids in the morning and embark on the drive south to Lake Naivasha, which takes you through the grand scenic landscapes that typify the Great Rift Valley, dotted with volcanic lakes and rearing peaks.

In the mid afternoon you arrive at Great Rift Valley Lodge, where the sweeping views encompass Lake Naivasha and the extinct volcanic caldera of Mount Longonot in the distance. After enjoying a delicious alfresco lunch, allow yourself to settle into your elegant and inviting suite. The afternoon is yours to explore and enjoy the wonderful scenery while discovering the multitude of bird species that live around and on the lake. As the sun begins to dip towards the horizon and the shadows begin to lengthen, return to the lodge for the cocktail hour, where you sip on a chilled drink, taking in the splendid view from the terrace.

Dinner is served in the traditional dining room, with genial conversation and laughter surrounding you: a fitting finale to your day in the wilds of Kenya.

Day 5

Explore Lake Nakuru

An early knock on your door brings you a freshly brewed hot drink that you enjoy in bed or on your verandah as the sun brings the world to life around you. A delicious breakfast buffet in the dining room prepares you for the morning’s adventure before you depart on a game drive to Lake Nakuru. Famous for its large concentration of water birds and flamingos, the lake is tinged in swathes of pink from the feathers of these magnificent birds. Rhinos are also regularly seen here and a sighting of these enormous, prehistoric-looking beasts is bound to get your heart racing.

At midday, you visit Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge for lunch with a magnificent view of the lake. After taking some time to relax and stretch your legs, you climb back aboard your vehicle to continue your explorations.

Driving through this ancient and vast landscape, you absorb the smell of the earth, the breeze in your hair and the absolute freedom of space. With the added excitement of the very real possibility of encountering one of the region’s famed leopards, you revel in a thrilling sense of anticipation at what nature might throw at you around the next bend in the road.

Returning to the lodge as dusk begins to fall, a chilled drink awaits you to marvel at the splendour of the African sunset at the end of a fabulous day on safari.

Days 6-7

Into the Mara

Depart Great Rift Valley Lodge in the morning and your guide makes his way south again, this time aiming for the fabled plains of the Masai Mara. You arrive at Ilkeliani Camp in time for lunch, and find a delightful safari lodge nestled in a grove of trees along the Talek River. Your canvas suite boasts a fantastic view over the river and the plains beyond, and often the scene includes animals coming to the water to drink.

During the Great Migration between July and September, in excess of a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles pass through this area, driven by an instinct as old as time to seek out water and fresh pastures. Undeterred by the host of predators that follow, and treacherous river crossing where enormous crocodiles lie in wait, they continue their circular march in an age-old dance of life and death on these never-ending plains.

Outside the Migration period, however, plenty remains to be seen. Resident animals include the Big 5, and wildlife encounters of a first-class nature abound. Driving through this wondrous landscape of grassy plains dotted with flat-topped acacia trees that stand like lone sentinels, you feel the immensity of the space that surrounds you.

As dusk begins to settle, and the light changes to a golden intensity, you begin the drive back to camp while the landscape takes on an ethereal and wondrous cloak of colour. A sunset drink waits for you on the viewing terrace overlooking the river, and you toast the splendid scene laid out before you.

Day 8

Homeward bound

After a final hearty breakfast, bid Ilkeliani Camp and the Masai Mara farewell as you drive back to Nairobi. Gazing out the window at the endless and primal landscape rolling by, your memories of your adventure come flooding back. Reminiscing on the adventures of the previous days, you recall the magical moments you have had: the sight of rhinos in the wild, the warm hearts of the people you have met, sunset over the Masai Mara’s plains. All of these will remain with you forever and compel you to return to Africa.
