Day to Day Itinerary

Days 1-2

The Smoke that Thunders

On arrival at Zambia's Livingstone International Airport, a representative will transfer you to The River Club. This delightful boutique hotel sits on the Zambezi River bank a few kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls. Called ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ by local tribes, the falls are a wonder of the natural world. Rushing over a mile-wide precipice into a boiling chasm, the falls generate a cloud of spray and rolling rumble seen and heard for miles around.

Your only challenge is to select two complimentary activities from the wide range on offer. A tour of Victoria Falls and a cultural visit to a local village are among the most popular, closely followed by a sunset cruise on the river. Sipping a cocktail in the golden light of an African sunset serenaded by huffing hippo is a classic safari experiences.

The optional activities include everything from helicopter and microlight flips over the falls to a thrilling jet boat safari down the raging Zambezi. If water levels permit, the boat reaches Livingstone Island in the middle of the river on the dizzying precipice of the falls. Adrenaline-fuelled diversions like bungee jumping and whitewater rafting are very popular, along with fishing for tiger, a species to test any angler’s skill.

After all the action in this adventure capital of Africa, it is a pleasure to return to the refined charm of The River Club with its croquet lawn and infinity pool overlooking the river. Enjoy sumptuous cuisine on the verandah, surrounded by soft lantern light below a crisp canopy of stars. Slip between the covers in your elegant suite and drift off, lulled to sleep by the gentle gurgles of the smooth-flowing Zambezi.

Days 3-5

A Linyanti adventure

After breakfast on the terrace, a short road transfer takes you across the Botswana border to Kasane Airport. A charter plane transfers you to a private Linyanti Concession, a renowned wildlife destination in the Botswana’s wild north. Your guide meets you at the airstrip and takes you on a game drive to Duma Tau Camp. Arriving at the edge of a lagoon, the lodge appears to float over the water.

After settling into one of only 10 beautifully appointed suites, it is time for high tea and your afternoon excursion. Explore a wonderful variety of habitats that support a myriad of life from hippos and crocodiles in the lagoons, to red lechwe, wildebeest, zebra and impala on its grassy floodplains. The woodlands are home to buffalo, kudu and giraffe - and Linyanti's predators are never far away from these big herds.

When the light tinges the landscape with gold, you set off on your first game drive. As the summer heat ebbs animals make their way to the water's edge, and there are no creatures keener for water than thirsty elephants. Watching these gentle giants silently emerge from the woodlands, you marvel at how quietly they move and at the obvious delight they take in sucking up great trunk-fulls of water. Young calves splash in the shallows watched over indulgently by their mothers and sisters. Finally, the matriarch's deep rumble signals that it is time to move, and as one they melt back into the trees.

As dusk gathers, your guide drives to a riverside spot where you climb out to stretch your legs and sip on a chilled drink, toasting the last fiery sliver of an African sunset.

Days 6-8

An Okavango adventure

After a final game drive and brunch at Duma Tau, depart for a flight south. Shortly after takeoff, the Linyanti wetlands disappear and a swathe of trackless woodland stretches to a glinting horizon. Drawing nearer, an extravagant mosaic of islands, channels and lagoons opens up below you - the Okavango Delta.

Kwetsani Camp is set in a private reserve and built on raised platforms overlooking a grassy plain. With its five tree-house suites gathered around a central dining and lounge area, the camp's atmosphere is one of secluded intimacy. Settle into your suite and soak up the views before venturing out for the afternoon game drive. With the scent of wild sage in the air, your guide interprets the signs of the wild, sharing his knowledge and experience of this extraordinary place with you. Game viewing takes centre stage but this is an ideal place for bird watching, the strident call of the African fish eagle rolling regularly across the water.

For an unparalleled Okavango Delta experience, take a guided mokoro safari. These traditional canoes are the ideal way to explore the Delta's shallow channels. Slip smoothly through the water while marvelling at the myriad of life surrounding you: tiny reed frogs cling to lily stalks, baby crocodiles disappear in a splash and brightly coloured birds flit through the overhanging papyrus and ferns. In the silence, broken only by birdsong and the soft gurgle of water, you hear the snorts of hippos in the deeper channels and may catch sight of an elephant crossing the water ahead of you.

Evenings at Kwetsani begin with fireside cocktails and a discussion of the day's adventures with your fellow travellers. After a candlelit supper, admire the glittering canopy of stars before you head back to your suite and the night sounds of grumbling hippo and lions roaring in the distance.

Day 9

Homeward bound

After a final adventure and brunch on the camp’s deck, you return to the airstrip for the flight to Maun. As you journey home, you recall the thundering of Victoria Falls and the rumble of a lion's roar at dusk, catch the scent of wild sage, and feel the tranquility of Botswana’s Green Season tucked away in your heart forever.
