overview

This six-day adventure combines two wonderfully different aspects of the Serengeti ecosystem. The wide open vistas and rolling grasslands teeming with game are counter balanced with authentic cultural interactions in the semi-permanent homesteads of the indigenous nomadic people, the Masai.

Begin your journey at Serengeti Safari Camp, a semi-permanent luxury tented camp that changes location every few months to ensure guests always have front row seats to the thrilling drama of the Great Migration. The next camp is Nduara Loliondo, also a semi-permanent luxury camp, this time located outside the Serengeti National Park in the lands of the pastoral Masai. Here you have the rare opportunity to explore the wilderness on foot with a Masai guide, visit his family homestead and experience Africa after dark on exciting spot-lit night drives.

This is a compact safari rich in diverse experiences and ideal for travellers want a balance between natural and cultural heritage of this remarkable area. It will suit both seasoned safari goers and novices, and combines easily with a romantic Indian Ocean island getaway for an unforgettable honeymoon.

Day to Day Itinerary

Days 1-2

Welcome to Tanzania

Arrive at Arusha Airport and transfer by light aircraft to the Serengeti National Park. Shortly after take off, the landscape opens out below you into rolling grasslands stretching to the horizon and providing the stage for one of nature’s grandest spectacles: the Great Migration. Each year, over a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate in search of water and fresh pastures, followed by a host of Africa’s most spectacular apex predators.

Your home for the next two nights is Serengeti Safari Camp, a classic tented camp that moves location every few months to ensure guest always enjoy front-row seats to the migration action. Suffused with the intrepid spirit of the early days of safari, the camp features six, spacious Meru-style suites radiating out from central dining and lounge tents. The central fireplace provides a perfect gathering point in the evenings for convivial conversation and chilled cocktails. Settling into the comfortable elegance of your suite, you freshen up for the afternoon’s adventure.

Driving out onto the vast open plains, you pick up the scent of wild basil and your Serengeti safari truly begins. With the expertise of a lifelong relationship with the wild, your guide interprets the signs of the wild and translates these for you, opening your eyes to the natural world. You witness the Great Migration in awe: the vast grasslands are hidden beneath the heaving flanks of thousands of animals, moving as one great herd, driven by instincts as old as Africa herself. Wildebeest have evolved to cover huge distances, easily outpacing their predators. Their calves can walk a few minutes after birth and outrun a lion a few days later – the lion prides that follow the migration are skilled at singling out weaker members of the herd, setting the scene for epic showdowns between predator and prey.

You salute your first Serengeti sunset over chilled drinks, stretching your legs at a viewing spot. Back at camp, a roaring fire and cosy lantern light welcome you. Mouth-watering aromas drift from the kitchen, enticing you to the dining tent.

Days 3-5

A Masai adventure

After breakfast, you drive east across the open plains to Nduara Loliondo, a lodge set in a private conservancy belonging to the Masai people. The camp keeps to the rhythm of the seasons and moves location twice a year to ensure both a light eco-footprint and provide guests with optimum game viewing. Small and intimate, the camp's central building resembles a Mongolian yurt, around which the Meru-style guest tents are laid out.

Being a private conservancy, guests have access to a range of activities not permitted in the national park. Nature walks with Masai guides introduce you to the hidden language of spoor and scat, along with the plants, insects and small mammals that are easily missed on a game drive.  With its emphasis on genuine cultural interactions, Nduara Loliondo facilitates visits to a traditional manyatta homestead, where you can observe how the Masai survive in this unforgiving wilderness. Despite their somber, warrior appearance, these indigenous nomads welcome you with warm smiles, proud to share their ancient culture.

Another activity exclusive to private reserves, the camp offers night drives. Your guide seeks out nocturnal species with the aid of a spotlight, searching for the telltale luminous eyes of genet cats, hyenas, civets and even giant owls. Return to the warm conviviality of camp and an evening of delicious food, light conversation and laughter - a fitting finale to your safari.

Day 6

Farewell to Tanzania

After breakfast, you bid Nduara Loliondo farewell take a final drive to the airstrip. On the flight back to Arusha, the sights and sounds of the Serengeti come back to you: the thrilling drama of the Great Migration, the scent of wild basil, the cry of the fish eagle, and the warmth of the Masai people.

"The perfect trip for those looking for an exclusive tented experience. Serengeti Safari Camp follows the migration’s movements, giving you your migration fix. Nduara Loliondo is one the most unique tented camps I have visited to date. Here the variety of activities – i.e. game drives, walks and night drives, means that you can be highly active if preferred."
