overview

This action-packed, 9-day safari combines Tanzania’s top three wildlife destinations with superb Big 5 game viewing year-round, and the spectacle of the Great Migration between April and June. An unforgettable journey, Treasures of Tanzania includes a selection of East Africa’s most celebrated lodges.

From Kilimanjaro International Airport, you are whisked away for a night at Lake Duluti Lodge. The next morning, you begin your safari on the shores of Lake Manyara, home to a rich diversity of animals and exceptional birdlife. Hemingway called this area, 'the loveliest I had seen in Africa' – it is still a landscape of great natural beauty. Then you proceed northwest to the legendary plains of the Serengeti, scene of the Great Migration as over a million zebra and wildebeest migrate in search of sun-ripened grazing.

Your final destination is a world wonder: the Ngorongoro Crater. Your home for two nights is the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, set on the lip of the crater with breath taking views across the encircled grasslands.

This is the tour of a lifetime through East Africa’s most rewarding reserves, perfect for both seasoned travellers and first-timers. The Treasures of Tanzania makes for an unforgettable honeymoon, and combining it with a romantic Indian Ocean island gives you the best of land and sea.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Tanzania

On arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be met and transferred to Lake Duluti Lodge in Arusha. Known as the 'safari capital' of the continent, Arusha lies between Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro and is near not only Arusha National Park but also the famous Laetoli Footprints, which are human-like prints preserved in ash that are over 3.5 million years old.

At Lake Duluti Lodge, you can unwind in your chalet, which is set in lush gardens. The lodge has Internet access and baby-sitting services if you are travelling with a little one, and can arrange a fascinating and fragrant tour of the surrounding coffee plantations.

Day 2-3

On the shores of Lake Manyara

From Arusha Airport, you board your charter flight to Lake Manyara. Thanks to a range of natural habitats - from a central soda lake that is a haven for thousands of flamingos and water birds to thickly forested valleys and wide-open grasslands - Manyara is home to a great diversity of wildlife and game. In addition to its famous tree-climbing lions, there is a large elephant population and plenty of plains game, from antelope to zebra, and giraffe to buffalo.

Your home for two nights is Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, which is set in a grove of mahogany trees and has only 10 very comfortable suites radiating from its central lounge, bar and dining area. Spend your days exploring the abundant natural beauty of Manyara on game drives, and your evenings lingering over delicious dinners served beneath the starry skies.

Day 4-6

Into the Serengeti

After breakfast, a charter flight whisks you to the legendary plains of the Serengeti. The Great Migration takes place here, when in excess of a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles migrate annually in search of water and sun-ripened grazing. They face bands of predators and treacherous river crossings on their journey, driven forward by an instinct as old as the land itself.

Your home for three nights is the Serengeti Under Canvas camp. This intimate and elegant camp moves with the Great Migration to ensure you have front-row seats to one of nature's biggest spectacles. Explore this rugged terrain on game drives and see how the land all the way to the horizon is filled with vast herds of game and the lions and cheetahs that prey on them. A highly recommended experience is a dawn hot-air balloon ride over the plains; after exploring the Serengeti on ground level, the aerial perspective is something to savour.

Day 7-8

At Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater ranks as one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations on earth. This long-extinct volcano is the world's largest intact caldera and home to an incredible array of habitats, which support a rich population of game. With springs and streams of fresh water and the natural barricades of the crater walls, this magical place is home to elephants with enormous tusks, endangered black rhinos and black-maned lions.

Your home is Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, which is perched on the very rim of the crater and is sometimes shrouded in a thin veil of mist. Your suite offers one of the most spectacular views in Africa in a lodge that specialises in lavish creature comforts. Explore Ngorongoro on daily game drives - this is one of the few reserves where all of the Big 5 are likely to be spotted in a single day.

Day 9

After a last game drive, you begin your journey home. Flying over this ancient landscape, the memories of your journey rise up before you: the sights and sounds you have encountered, the wonders you have witnessed...
