Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Tanzania

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your guide and vehicle will collect you for the drive through the Great Rift Valley to Kirurumu Manyara Lodge. Along the way, you are surrounded by epic scenery on a grand scale as you leave Mount Kilimanjaro towering in the distance. Follow the valley with the escarpment rearing up around you and, after a few hours, you ascend the slope to the vantage of Kirurumu Manyara Lodge, with a glorious view of Lake Manyara shimmering below.

After a delicious lunch on the terrace to in the splendid panorama, you can settle into your suite before spending the afternoon exploring the area by mountain bike ride or take a walk with a Maasai guide who will show you some of the little-known secrets of the Tanzanian bush.

Return to the lodge in the evening for a scrumptious dinner served by candlelight in the dining room before taking a final drink at the fireside, gazing at the twinkling canopy of millions of stars.

Day 2

Lake Manyara National Park

Enjoy a delicious cup of freshly brewed Tanzanian coffee with your early breakfast before departing on a game drive into Manyara National Park, which is famous for its tree-climbing lions. Herds of buffalo, wildebeest and zebra congregate on the grassy plains, while the forests are home to impressively tusked elephants. The birdlife on the lake is spectacularly prolific and sometimes huge flocks of flamingos turn the shores pink with their plumage.

Tuck into a delectable picnic lunch below the boughs of a shady tree, then climb aboard your vehicle for the drive into the Serengeti. These vast, rolling plains seem to go on forever, and are the scene of one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles in the world. Every year, in excess of a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles migrate through the region in search of water and fresh pastures. Undeterred by river crossings where enormous crocodiles lurk or the host of predators that follow them, these animals are driven forward by blind instinct to survive.

After a thrilling afternoon out in the plains, you arrive at Serengeti Sopa Lodge in the late afternoon. Settle into your suite, have a refreshing dip in the sparkling pool, and enjoy a sunset cocktail before dinner, gazing out at the splendid view below you.

Day 3

The wonders of the Serengeti

After a delicious early breakfast, depart on your game drive into the Serengeti once more.
You have the day to explore this vast and ancient ecosystem, where the delicate balance of survival - a dance between predator and prey - has remained unchanged in millennia.

With a backdrop of endlessly rolling, acacia-studded plains, you seek out the extraordinary encounters that make the Serengeti such a special place. Even outside the Migration period, there are a host of resident species to be found here, and lions and hyenas are especially abundant. The sky overhead arches in an enormous dome as it only can in Africa, while the breeze ruffles your hair and you inhale the aromas of this untrammelled wilderness, revelling in the freedom of unlimited space. There is no feeling like watching a herd of antelope on the move, a towering journey of giraffe moving across the horizon, the thrilling moment that you spy a lion in the grass, invisible until a moment before.

You return to the Serengeti Sopa Lodge in the evening, filled with the excitement of your day, bubbling over with a sense of wonder that only a day on safari can give. After spending a convivial evening at the fireside and dinner table, filled with laughter and conversation, you slip between the sheets, the sound of the African night outside lulling you to sleep.

Day 4

The wonder of Ngorongoro

After a delicious breakfast, you set off for the Olduvai Gorge. This incredible archaeological site is the scene of many Palaeolithic discoveries, and where some of the oldest hominids have been found. After a scenic picnic lunch, continue the journey to the Ngorongoro Crater, which ranks as one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations on Earth. This long-extinct volcano is the world’s largest intact caldera and its walls contain an incredible array of habitats, which in turn give life to an astonishing population of game. With springs and streams to support their water needs, the animals need never leave the crater, and the natural barricades of its walls have protected a population of elephants with enormous tusks, black rhinos and black-maned lions, among others.

With a density of game rarely seen elsewhere, combined with breath-taking scenery, the magic of Ngorongoro will begin to work on your senses. One of the few places in Africa where the Big 5 can be usually be seen in one game drive, there is also so much more to absorb. Herds of gazelle, wildebeest and zebra are resident here, while smaller predators like caracal and serval are also seen, along with the lions’ main competitor, the spotted hyena. The Lerai forest and the marshes below it are the domain of enormous tuskers, where sightings of these beautiful animals are enhanced by spectacular scenery as a backdrop.

As the shadows begin to lengthen on the crater floor, you ascend the walls and drive to Ngorongoro Farmhouse. Take a stroll through the rolling gardens to stretch your legs, have a refreshing dip in the pool and settle in to the comfort of your suite.

A sumptuous dinner is served alfresco beneath the stars and the multi-course menu, accompanied by a thoughtful wine list, is a fitting end to the marvels of your safari.

Day 5

Homeward bound

Enjoy breakfast with homemade bread still warm from the oven, then bid Ngorongoro Farmhouse farewell.

As you drive back to Arusha, you see the familiar shape of Mount Kilimanjaro ahead of you like a welcoming sentinel. As the landscape of the Great Rift Valley drifts by, allow the images of the previous days to flow through your mind: the rolling hills of the Serengeti, the teeming life of the Ngorongoro Crater, the thrill of spotting your first lion…
