Day to Day Itinerary

Days 1-2

Arrive in Botswana

Look forward to a warm welcome at Botswana’s Maun Airport where you will be met on arrival by a representative who will assist you to your light aircraft for your onward air transfer to DumaTau, a luxury tented camp located in the private Linyanti Reserve on the western boundary of Botswana's legendary Chobe National Park.

Set close to the source of the game-rich Savuti Channel and resting in the shade of mangosteen trees overlooking a large hippo-filled lagoon, DumaTau means ‘roar of the lion’ in the local Setswana tongue; you will have ample opportunity to hear and view these majestic creatures, with your days revolving around dramatic game-viewing opportunities in 4x4s, on foot and by water.

Famous for its elephant population, the area is home to enormous herds that congregate in winter (June to October) along the Linyanti's waterways; some even wander through the camp. During these dry months, sable and roan antelope traverse its floodplains, along with wild dogs, and large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, impala and other plains game. There are many hides in the area - including an excellent one at Zibadianja Lagoon which the source of the Savuti - that provide extraordinary photo opportunities.

Days 3-4

Explore the Okavango

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip for your air- and boat-transfer from DumaTau to Little Vumbura, an exclusive and intimate waterside camp of just six tents on a forested island in the northern reaches of Botswana’s magical Okavango Delta.

The focus of Little Vumbura is on water-based activities, with ample opportunities also for you to explore open woodlands and floodplains on 4x4 game drives. Bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, this lush area is renowned for its large populations of sable antelope and buffalo as well as predators such as lion, leopard and wild dog.

Hop into a mokoro (a dug-out canoe) and navigate the Delta’s reed-lined waterways, with each moment a memory captured forever: a malachite kingfisher, diminutive and jewel-like, perched on the umbel of a papyrus stem; a male red lechwe, a study in chestnut, etched against tussocks of miscanthus grass, surveying its territory from a termite mound; towering fan-shaped palms and a goliath heron soaring overhead…

Days 5-6

Cruise the deep channels of the perennial Delta

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip for your air transfer from Little Vumbura to Xigera, a classic water camp on Paradise Island in the Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta, a beautiful location made up of permanent wetlands, deep delta channels and dense riverine vegetation.

If water levels are low enough, set off on early-morning or late-afternoon game drives – commonly-sighted animals include lion, elephant, hippo, crocodile and the elusive, swamp-dwelling sitatunga antelope. Explore its winding waterways aboard a mokoro or enjoy the sunset on a motorboat cruise – the area is home also to abundant bird species such as Pel's fishing-owl, wattled cranes, African skimpers, lilac-breasted rollers and slaty egrets flitting through the sunlight between the trees.

Day 7

Return to Maun, with the Okavango forever in your memory

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip for your air transfer from Xigera Camp to Maun and your onward journey home. Pause for a moment as you step aboard your plane, for a part of you will remain forever in the Okavango, travelling its waterways repeatedly in your memory, with your photographs bearing witness to that journey: a red-billed oxpecker grooming a giraffe in the sunset stillness; rosettes of white-flowering water chestnuts girding a spotty-necked otter floating on its back, its prey clasped firmly between its forepaws; the low and sinewy stalk of a lion turning to stare down the lens of your camera…
