Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1-4

The pink lady

On your arrival at Cape Town International Airport you are transferred by road to the stately Belmond Mount Nelson hotel. One of the Mother City’s favourite landmarks, the ‘Nelly’ – as it endearingly referred to by locals – is most famous for its bold pink portico and scrumptious high tea. Fragrant rose bushes line the estate’s walkways, which lead through rolling gardens punctuated by majestic fountains to create a serene setting that is somehow detached from the bustle of Cape Town’s inner city.

The gracious hotel’s two heated pools invite you to spend tranquil hours lounging around their crystal-clear water. The extravagant lounge is a fitting place to curl up on a sofa with a book or make use of the hotel’s Wi-Fi. A vast terrace at the front of the hotel lends itself to a lengthy sun-soaked lunch accompanied by a glass of fine Cape white wine. At the tranquil spa, choose between special offerings such as an energising jet-lag recovery session or a romantic couple’s package. Begin your evening at the Planet Bar, with its decorative overhead constellations, before dining on a top-notch menu at its sister restaurant.

On the third morning of your stay you are collected from the hotel for a full-day Walk to Freedom Tour that provides fascinating insight into South Africa’s history framed by the struggle against apartheid struggle and the birth of the democratic Rainbow Nation.

Days 5-7

Pride of the Sabi Sand

You are transferred from the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel back to the airport where you board a plane to Johannesburg before connecting with a scheduled charter flight to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Bordering Kruger National Park and bisected by the Sabie River, this premium wilderness area is the country’s oldest private game reserve and offers some of the most impressive game viewing in all of Africa.

You are collected by your ranger at the reserve’s airstrip and transferred to Lion Sands – a family lodge steeped in history where hospitality is as important as conservation. Your safari home idyllically captures the spirit of the Sabie River whose beauty can be admired from the comfort of the furnished private viewing deck of your opulent suite. Twice-daily 4x4 game drives through the untamed Sabi wilderness are guided by expert ranger-and-tracker teams and offer unrestricted access to this predator-rich reserve that is renowned for its reliable leopard sightings.

Leisure time at the lodge is well spent lounging around one of two sapphire swimming pools that offer beautiful views into the wilderness where various antelope browse in the thickets. Around the lodge, Golden orb-web spiders make their homes between every nook and cranny, their stunning webs glistening like threads of the precious metal when caught by the sunlight. Mealtimes always feel like a special occasion: grand bush breakfasts and private candlelit dining set the tone for a remarkable culinary experience further accentuated by immaculate service and a wonderful selection of dining locations which vary for each meal.

After-dinner stargazing and intriguing lectures presented by knowledgeable wildlife enthusiasts round off a highly informative Sabi safari. Back in your riverside suite, the theme is uncluttered comfort and the mood is contemporary with a distinct Afro-European elegance. The centrepiece of your spacious en suite bathroom is an oversized claw-foot tub that affords you marvellous views of the Sabie River.

Day 8

Fit for a king

After breakfast you are transferred to the Sabi airstrip to catch your flight back to Johannesburg from where you are chauffeured to Fairlawns Hotel in the city’s affluent neighbourhood of Sandton. True to its name, this beautiful boutique hotel is set in a glorious estate with a thick carpet of green grass and flower-filled gardens. Its award-winning suites honour icons of South Africa’s history such as Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. The lavish rooms are architecturally and decoratively unique, but all feature an oak-shaded terrace overlooking the charming gardens and a cosy fireplace for chilly winter evenings.

After a sumptuous breakfast in the open-air restaurant, put your senses on high alert with a hydrotherapy treatment at the hotel’s Balinese Spa. A break from the heat of summer afternoons can be found in the large crystalline swimming pool surrounded by giant umbrellas and loungers. Sink into a leather couch in the hotel bar and catch up on your mail using the hotel’s Wi-Fi. The en suite bathroom of your first-class abode is equipped with a jet bath, conducive to long soaks before dinner at the hotel’s superb a la carte restaurant where you dare not miss the chef’s speciality – white truffle risotto, which is divinely creamy and rich.

Days 9-13

Castaway island fantasy

You are transferred back to OR Tambo International Airport from where you fly out to Mauritius before your scenic journey by road to Angsana Balaclava – an extravagant boutique resort set on Baie aux Tortues Island off the country’s idyllic north-west coast. One of the 2013 Travellers' Choice Awards for the Top 25 Hotels in Mauritius, this resort’s compelling design fuses Oriental, Occidental and African-style influences. Thatched roofs, rattan wall dressings and elegant stone flooring create a sanctuary of peace and serenity. Tall palms line the pathways between the resort’s opulent suites where birdsong and the sound of waves lapping the shoreline are heard while the gentle sea breeze carries the sweet scent of frangipanis and bougainvillea.

Uninhibited self-indulgence is the forte of this tropical paradise. After breakfast, weigh up the joys of taking a refreshing dip in the infinity pool or curling up with a book on one of the rattan loungers. Enjoy an Asian-inspired spa treatment using ylang and coconut oils in the resort’s award-winning wellness facility. One day, set sail to deserted Gabriel Island and enjoy world-class snorkelling followed by an on-board lunchtime barbeque. For retail therapy explore the capital of Port Louis with its fashionable shops and vibrant street markets.

The cerulean Indian Ocean just a stone’s throw away invites sun-kissed swimming and there are other activities such as glass-bottomed boat trips, windsurfing and sublime sailing on offer. Mauritian-Asian fusion cuisine is delicately prepared by the chef in the open-sided Oryza restaurant where lively bands keep you entertained. The seawater pool with sandy bottom has a floating bar where you can enjoy a cocktail or lobster feast in the shallows. Feet-in-sand dining is also arranged while a private gourmet in-suite dinner provides the perfect romantic interlude on your honeymoon holiday.
