Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Karibu Kenya!

On your arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you are transferred by road to Southern Sun Mayfair Hotel. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens with rolling lawns and tranquil water features, this centrally located hotel features a restaurant alongside the pool deck for tasty breakfasts, lunches and buffet dinners. Take a dip in one of the hotel’s two swimming pools both surrounded by comfortable loungers and equipped with underwater lighting for night bathing. Your elegantly appointed suite offers magnificent views of the gardens and complimentary Wi-Fi access.

Days 2-3

In the shadow of Kili

This morning you are transferred by road from Nairobi to Amboseli Sopa Lodge nestled in the foothills of iconic Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain. Situated in the heart of Amboseli National Park, this traditional thatched-roof safari camp offers premium game viewing and the opportunity to get close to massive herds of elephant. The lodge’s decorative design incorporates the brilliant primary colours and iconic shapes and symbols representative of the Maasai. The lodge overlooks Amboseli’s golden savannah plains with uninterrupted views of majestic Kilimanjaro. Nearby emerald swamps are fed by melting snow from this mammoth mountain, providing the only source of water for animals and thus the perfect place to spot them drinking.

Amboseli National Park is inhabited by more elephants than all but a handful of reserves in Africa. On guided 4x4 game drives you might also spot lion, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and a variety of antelope with sightings in the dry months fairly easy to come by due to the sparser vegetation. The dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro makes this landscape a wildlife photographer’s dream and getting that classic shot of a tusker against Africa’s favourite mountain is a definite highlight of the Amboseli experience. Local Maasai guides lead nature walks through the captivating wilderness, imparting their indigenous knowledge about the fauna, flora and small animals that inhabit the reserve. Visit the cultural centre and find an array of educational material about one of Africa’s most prominent tribes who have been living here for centuries. Guided village visits are another enlightening cultural experience and provide the opportunity to learn firsthand about Maasai traditions and gain valuable insight into their traditional way of life. At the end of each day retire to your en suite African-themed room that features a king-sized bed and a private verandah with breathtaking views over the plains.

Day 4

Nakuru's famed flamingos

After breakfast you are driven to Flamingo Hill Tented Camp within the eponymous national park that is inhabited by a population of approximately two million lesser and greater flamingos. The lodge is cleverly designed to blend into its lush natural surroundings of palm trees and rolling lawns. From your suite’s furnished terrace you are afforded incredible views of the glistening lake where flamingos, pelicans and a variety of eagle species can be spotted in vast flocks.

Guided 4x4 game drives introduce you to some of the other animals on the reserve which include giraffe, zebra, waterbuck and of one of Kenya’s largest concentrations of endangered black rhino. Buffet-style dining is enjoyed alfresco and includes barbecues and candlelit African-themed dinners that are preceded by contemplative sundowners around the inviting swimming pool. Surrounding the lake – usually a frenzy of pink feathers – are acacia and euphorbia forests that attract animals seeking shade in the heat of the day. Take a picnic basket to Hippo Pool near the Baharini springs or use your binoculars to observe resident baboon troops from Baboon Cliff Lookout.

Days 5-6

The wonders of the Masai Mara

After checking out of the lodge this morning you are driven to Masai Mara National Reserve where your next stay is at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge. Positioned on the slopes of the Oloolamuita Hills within a reserve synonymous with the annual Great Migration hundreds of thousands of ungulates – between May and October – this lodge features traditional Maasai thatch-roofed round buildings set in mature wooden gardens with interiors which reflect the their rich culture and art. Guided 4x4 game drives present the opportunity to witness migrating animals and possibly even make a crossing of the crocodile-infested Mara River. On the must-do list of every safari-enthusiast, the reserve is especially known for its predators, which include high concentrations of lion and cheetah.

Enjoy thrilling walking safaris with local Maasai tribesmen who share their knowledge about plants and small animals often overlooked while traversing the reserve on a 4x4. Like at Amboseli Sopa Lodge, you are able to visit a nearby Maasai village and learn more about their unique way of life. Between activities there is time for relaxing around the swimming pool situated at the heart of the lodge and the bush baby feeding table allows you to get up-close to these wide-eyed primates after dark.
