The safari begins in Nairobi, where you meet your guide and set off for the Aberdare National Park. Spend the night at the famed Treetops Lodge, where Princess Elizabeth was on honeymoon when she became Queen of England. This historic ‘tree house’ sits in the path of an ancient elephant migration route and overlooks an active waterhole where a parade of wildlife constantly arrives to slake their thirst. The following day you drive to Lake Nakuru Lodge, home to vast flocks of flamingos and a welter of big game, including black and white rhinoceros. The journey continues the next day to the Masai Mara National Reserve, where you spend two nights at Mara Simba Lodge and explore the myriad wonders of this Big 5 landscape.

Perfect as a private and luxurious introduction to the wildlife and scenic marvels of Kenya, this journey is ideal for a family or group of friends travelling together.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Karibu Kenya

On arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will meet your guide and set off on the drive to the Aberdares National Park.

Driving north through picturesque Rift Valley scenery between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountain range, you drink in the splendid views rolling by the windows until you leave the main road at Outspan Nyeri and continue into the Aberdare National Park to Treetops Lodge.

This quirky hotel retains its original ‘tree house’ character, set on stilts overlooking an active waterhole where a great variety of wildlife constantly arrive to quench their thirst. Settle into your room and admire the view from the panoramic windows before making your way to the ground-level hide or rooftop viewing platform to enjoy the show. As dusk settles, floodlights are switched on, illuminating the scene as nocturnal animals begin to arrive: keep an eye out for genets, civets and hyenas. A delicious dinner awaits you in the atmospheric dining room, where convivial banter and conversation drifts over the tables as you enjoy a tasty selection of courses from the menu. Taking a hot drink with you to the roof, sink into a comfortable chair and look up at the dazzling display of the Milky Way while the sounds of the African night reverberate around you. Remain on the terrace to watch the wildlife below, or if you choose, return to your suite for the night, reassured that should an interesting sighting occur at the waterhole, a little bell at your bedside will ring to alert you!

Day 2

The wonders of Lake Nakuru

Enjoy an early breakfast before you set off on the road, along a spectacular route lined with interesting geological formations and dotted with shallow Rift Valley lakes. Arriving at Lake Nakuru National Park, a short game drive through a rich and varied landscape brings you to Lake Nakuru Lodge, perched on a hill overlooking the lake that is awash with pink from the feathers of thousands upon thousands of flamingos.

After enjoying a hearty lunch on the terrace, discover your suite and take in the view from the enormous picture windows. You are able to settle in, take a stroll or enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool before heading off into the park for an afternoon’s game drive. This small but important park is home to a great variety of animals and birds, and is a vital conservation area for black and white rhinoceros. Seeing these massive prehistoric-looking beasts in the wild is an experience that few will ever forget; an experience made more poignant by their critically endangered status. The park also has a healthy population of antelope and buffalo, which of course attracts predators such as lions and hyenas.

Along the lakeshore, a welter of water birds are to be seen, most notably the flamingos and pelicans but keep an eye out for the many colourful and intriguing other species that make up the bird list here.

As the sunset paints a fiery palette across the sky, return to the lodge for a refreshing cocktail on the terrace while drinking in the spectacular view. Soon the aromas from the kitchen entice you to the dining room, where a selection of delicious dishes from the buffet leaves you spoilt for choice.

Days 3-4

The endless Mara

After an early start, you depart Lake Nakuru after breakfast and make your way past the escarpment of the Rift Valley. The road leads you through forests and farmland and finally you arrive on the rolling plains of the fabled Masai Mara.

In the golden light of the afternoon, you set off into the rolling grasslands and gentle hills to see what nature has in store for you. This landscape is the scene of one of nature’s most incredible spectacles: the Great Migration. During the months between August and November, in excess of a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles migrate through the region in their endless journey in search of water and fresh grazing. Undeterred by dangerous river crossings where enormous crocodiles lurk or the host of predators that pursue them, the animals are driven forward relentlessly by an instinct as old as time. This is one of the most dramatic times to visit the Mara, when the landscape is literally covered in a great mass of animals but outside of the season there remains a host of resident wildlife to be enjoyed. The predators of the Mara are renowned to be plentiful and big-cat sightings are at the top of the list. Large prides of lions roam the landscape here, and leopards are often seen in the woodlands. Wide open spaces are the domain of cheetahs that use their lightning speed to chase and bring down their prey.

The next day, you rise at dawn with a freshly-brewed hot drink and before you know it, you are once again out on the plains in search of what nature has to offer. Dew sparkles on the grass, the air is crisp and clean and a massive dome of sky arches overhead. Animals are still active in the coolness of morning, and you spend a few hours soaking in the splendour of Kenya’s greatest wildlife sanctuary.

Enjoy your final afternoon game drive seeking out the Big 5 on the endless plains, bathed in a beautiful golden light. Stopping below an acacia at sunset, the image of this flat-topped tree will be imprinted on your memory as an iconic symbol of this extraordinary place.

Day 5

Return to Nairobi

Enjoy your last breakfast before boarding your vehicle and setting off for Nairobi. First driving through the Mara and then out onto the great open spaces of the Rift Valley, recollections of the past few days come flooding back. The sight of elephants silently drinking from the waterhole at Treetops on a moonlit night, the lonely howl of a hyena in the dark, the fathomless amber eyes of a lion… These memories of Africa will remain with you forever and compel you one day to return.
