Your 8-day Kenyan safari kicks off with a night in Nairobi before heading off in your private vehicle with an experienced and dedicated guide to Samburu Game Lodge on the western bank of the Uaso Nyiro River. Samburu’s wildlife is plentiful in the thick acacia and palm forests along the riverbanks where plains grazers and browsers come to drink and seek shade.

Your next destination is Treetops Lodge located just inside the gates of Kenya's Aberdare National Park and which overlooks a natural waterhole right in the path of an ancient elephant migration route. On a clear day, from your dreamy forest safari retreat you can also see the snowy peaks of Mount Kenya. You then drive to Lake Baringo Club set on the water’s edge of the idyllic Lake, which offers quiet relaxation and birding to rival any destination worldwide. Morning and evening bird walks are guided by the specialist ornithologist who imparts his expert knowledge about the various species and their habitats.

Your last stop before making your way back to Nairobi is Keekorok Lodge in the eastern section of the Masai Mara National Reserve. This African-style lodge lies in the direct path of thousands of zebra and wildebeest which migrate across the plains between May and October each year. Hot-air balloon trips provide the opportunity to see migrating animals from a bird’s-eye view and are followed by a champagne bush breakfast.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1

Hakuna matata

You are met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transferred to the Southern Mayfair Nairobi, where you spend the night. Your elegantly appointed suite overlooks the hotel’s well-kept gardens and offers complimentary Wi-Fi. There are two restaurants available; one of which serves meals all day alongside the pool deck and the other a casual steakhouse. Take a dip in one of the hotel’s two swimming pools, which are both surrounded by comfortable loungers and equipped with underwater lighting for night bathing.

Days 2-3

Discover Samburu

After breakfast you are chauffeured in your private 4x4 to Samburu Game Lodge within the Samburu National Reserve. Set in riverine forest on the western bank of the Uaso Nyiro – Kenya’s largest seasonal river – this traditional safari lodge is flanked by the sheer-sided slopes of the majestic Ol Olokwe Mountain, which shimmers on the horizon when you gaze across the sun-kissed landscape. The Samburu tribe are semi-nomadic pastoralists who herd mainly cattle. The dominant animal here is the elephant, which are known to knock over trees and rip out saplings in an attempt to gouge holes in the sandy riverbed for water when it runs dry.

Guided 4x4 game viewing is rewarding along the Uaso Nyiro River, with rare species such as beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe inhabiting the reserve. Your suite is equipped with a private balcony overlooking the river, which is inhabited by crocodiles and hippos. Lorokushu restaurant has a distinct African style and surveys the Uaso Nyiro. During dinner – which is served buffet style with plenty of options to suit all palates – you are entertained by Samburu musicians. The crocodile bar is set low on the riverbank to allow for close-up viewing of the resident crocs and monitor lizards. Around sunset, bait is put out to attract the toothy reptiles to within feet of guests, who can watch from a safe distance. Each afternoon you are treated to a unique cultural experience in the form of a Samburu dancing performance of men and women dressed in their traditional finery.

Day 4

Stay among the Treetops

This morning you are transported in your private 4x4 to Treetops Lodge, which is located just inside the gates of Kenya's Aberdare National Park. Overlooking a natural waterhole right in the path of an ancient elephant migration route between the Aberdare Mountains and Mount Kenya National Park, this well-established lodge is probably best known as the place where Princess Elizabeth II spent the night of her ascension to the throne in 1952. Sheltered by the dense lichen-hung forest, a tree grows right through the middle of the main lodge, which is flanked on either side by the rustic tree house suites offering seclusion and romance. From your dreamy forest retreat you have the opportunity to view a variety of wildlife and the snowy peaks of Mount Kenya on a clear day.

Relax in the comfort of the lodge's raised observation lounges from where you can photograph animals as they come to drink from the waterhole, and even request that a buzzer alert you when interesting wildlife is spotted while you are in your suite. Large windows in the restaurant and lounge allow the captivating wilderness to seep inside. Guided 4x4 game drives within the Aberdare National Park reveal its wildlife wonders and a talk about the lodge and surrounding reserve can be arranged if you are interested. Enjoy exquisite meals in the contemporary dining room where the tables are illuminated by mini chandeliers, adding to the charm of this historical safari getaway. Through an initiative started in 2007, the lodge has planted several thousand indigenous trees and you are invited to plant one yourself during season.

Day 5

The beauty of Baringo

After breakfast, drive to Lake Baringo Club, which is set among beautiful gardens that sweep down to the water’s edge of idyllic Lake Baringo. With architecture somewhat reminiscent of Spain and gardens much like an English country estate, this unassuming lakeside lodge offers quiet relaxation and birding to rival any destination in the world. The lake – the northernmost of the Kenyan Rift Valley lakes after Turkana – is a highlight of the east African ornithology circuit and a paradise for birders who visit to observe migratory water bird species that inhabit the wooded creeks, small islands and white pebble beaches. Watch over the stunning lake as local fishermen – keenly observed by kingfishers – precariously paddle the waters between hippos and crocodiles for their daily catch, all set against the magnificent backdrop of the Laikipia escarpment.

Beyond the main buildings, the accommodation stretches out in a long line of chalets set in the expansive gardens where there is a sparkling swimming pool with shaded loungers. In the evenings, hippos graze on the lawns fronting the lodge. A jetty extends out into the lake, from where you can take a thrilling boating safari to discover the resident and migratory wildlife. In your room there is a newsletter detailing the location of birds nesting on the hotel grounds, which changes depending on the season. Morning and evening bird walks are accompanied by the resident ornithologist who imparts his expert knowledge and ensures as many significant East African sightings as possible. Aside from the incredible diversity of birdlife, there are a number of antelope to be found in the area, some of which include Grant's gazelle, waterbuck and dik-dik.

Days 6-7

Into the Masai Mara

After breakfast you set off for Keekorok Lodge, north of the Mara River in the eastern section of the Masai Mara National Reserve. This large African-style lodge was one of the very first to be built inside Kenya’s signature park and lies in the migratory path of thousands of zebra and wildebeest that cross the plains between May and October each year. An excellent feature of the lodge is a 300-metre raised walkway that cuts through the bush so you can observe birds and smaller animals. A hide at the end of the walkway overlooks a lake teeming with hippos. Game also makes a habit of wandering on the lawns closer to the chalets where, if waiting with a camera, you are bound to get some fantastic photographs from the comfort of your private balcony.

Relax on the lodge’s terrace with a cup of Kenyan tea overlooking the permanent springs and lush grassland, or take an afternoon dip in the sparkling swimming pool. Hidden away in a quiet corner of Keekorok’s grounds is the Elephant Deck, which provides a secluded spot nestled in the trees where, accompanied by birds and monkeys in the trees above, you can observe these gentle giants as they browse the acacia trees and dine on their sweet leaves for lunch.

While traversing one of Africa’s most celebrated Big 5 reserves on morning and evening game drives, you will encounter many animals, and in season quite possibly large herds of migrating ungulates. Witnessing a crossing of the Mara River is perhaps the most dramatic of migratory scenes as hippos and crocodiles lurk in the water waiting for the opportune moment to strike as the grass-seeking animals as they attempt to get across the water.
