Begin in Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi where you overnight at Eka Hotel before making your way to Kitich Camp within the Samburu National Reserve. Situated on the upper slopes of the Mathews Mountains, a prime activity here is walking through the valley accompanied by Samburu guides, who share their extensive ecological knowledge as you track big game through the rainforest. Enjoy refreshing dips in crystal-clear streams which run down the mountain, and even in the springs and rivers around the camp.

The next leg of your Kenyan safari takes you to Shaba National Reserve, built on the site where Born Free author Joy Adamson first set up camp. The reserve is a twitcher’s paradise with sightings to rival even the very best of Kenya’s many wildlife sanctuaries. Antelope, including the rare desert Beisa oryx and gerenuk, are also on the list of must-sees. Excursions to the glorious Penny’s Drop waterfall, lavish bush breakfasts and walking safaris along the Ewaso Nyiro River gorge are among the other activities on offer.

End your Kenyan vacation in the heart of the Masai Mara, site of the Great Migration in season and classic Big 5 country. Elephant Pepper Camp merges 21st century eco-friendliness with 19th century antiques to create a romantic ambience that is perfected by personalised service and exclusive game drives in the Mara North Conservancy.

Day to Day Itinerary

The splendour of Samburu

Days 5-7

Shelter in Shaba

Check out after breakfast for your transfer to the lesser-known Shaba National Reserve where your stayover is Joy's Camp built on the site of Born Free author Joy Adamson’s original canvas home. This lavish tented safari camp’s unique position overlooking a large natural spring provides magnificent views across the plains which were once home to Elsa the lioness, made famous by Adamson’s novel and the smash-hit film. The rocky hills, acacias and grasslands of this landscape are guarded by the Bodich and Shaba Mountains, which glow brilliantly at dusk. This is a birder’s paradise, with sightings to rival Kenya’s more avian-rich sanctuaries.

Explore the Shaba plains on a 4x4 game drive, your expert guide pointing out reticulated giraffe nibbling on acacia trees and impressive herds of Grevy’s zebra. Your main prerogative is bird watching – and you have never seen this many starlings in your life! Since leaving the camp you can already tick off two of the ‘northern five’ and you have spotted the yellow-billed hornbill – a signature species in this region of Africa. From your suite’s spacious verandah under the acacias you are able to soak up breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, rocky river gorges and a spring where antelope lazily come to drink. Feeling inspired to paint, you set up an easel in front of this splendid African landscape and begin working the provided pigment onto paper.

Visit Penny’s Drop waterfall, topping off the experience with a lavish bush breakfast. One afternoon, swap the 4x4 for your feet and explore the reserve on foot, learning about its micro-ecosystems on a guided walking safari along the Ewaso Nyiro River gorge, where you spot crocodiles sunbathing on the muddy banks. Take a day trip to the natural salt pans of the Magado Crater with a picnic lunch or swim in the camp’s pool surrounded by loungers which overlook the life-giving spring. Reflect on the day’s events over a splendid 3-course dinner before retiring to your walk-in tent and gently shutting your eyes to the captivating sounds of the Shaba plains.

Days 8-10

Into the ancient Masai Mara

After breakfast you are transferred to the airstrip for your flight to the Masai Mara National Reserve, where you are met on arrival and transferred to Elephant Pepper Camp in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy. This tented eco-camp – bordering the main reserve – is a luxury safari retreat that offers exclusivity and the utmost privacy for a bespoke African safari experience. On expertly guided 4x4 game drives from May to October you are able to witness the migration of thousands of zebra and wildebeest as they traverse the magnificent plains in search for fresh grazing lands and water.

Your elegantly appointed tent boasts a private verandah equipped with a hammock overlooking the captivating wilderness, while its interior of 19th century campaign furniture, antique ornaments and beautiful lanterns creates the most idyllic sanctuary in the heart of the Mara wilderness.

The camp’s environmental responsibility extends further than its completely removable tent structures and the fact that the camp is reliant on solar-powered LED lighting. It also has a longstanding relationship with the local Maasai community, guaranteeing landowners stable revenue, transparent financial management and the preservation of the balance between wildlife and traditional pastoralism. A guided tour of the nearby Maasai village is a fantastic cultural experience and intriguing introduction into their traditional way of life.

Day 11
